Self protection? Something that fires fast for use at relatively close range, with stopping power... minimum .38 caliper... probably a 9mm semiautomatic is the way to go, I have a friend who swears by Beretta.
Target Shooting/accuracy, definitely a revolver, probably a .38 is about right... Can't recomend a brand though??? S&W?
I was thinking I may get one within a year or two for self protection and scaring kids that come around ringing my doorbell and shit... maybe I should get some blanks for it and really scare the shit out of them.

Rock Salt... then you can blast them for real and scare the shit out of 'em and sting their asses on the way out without actually hurting them...

Some little fuckers rang my doorbell earlier.. I heard them coming before they did because my window was open.. I was going to run to the door and chase them and scream about killing their parents but my neighbor beat me to it since he saw some of them fucking around near his truck.

Nah, I'd fuck up some shit and blame it on them. Plus I just want to make them shit their pants.

Reminds me of that scene in Heathers where JD pulls out a giant handgun in the cafeteria and shoots blanks at the jocks that are harrassing him. They shit themselves literally.
Of course its not quite so funny after columbine I guess.

Only reply if you HAVE used it and want to recommend it.
Ruger P85 9mm, pre-ban so you can get 15 round magazines with it, my favorite gun.
However if you want stopping power and a mighty boomstick:
Taurus .357, 8 shot revolver with a 6" barrel.
Those are the two I own, now when I purchase another one, .454 magnum, however two caveots to that, rounds are very expensive and your hand gets bruised after firing off about 20 rounds.
well if ya wanna get both of those fuckers with one shot then use a grenade instead.....its a nice effect. if you aim it right you can get their body parts to fly real far.

Both? There was a group of like 15 kids running around earlier.

Well then its time to place a few "bouncing betties" in your front yard... It pops up out of the ground to about waist level and then blows a sheet of shrapnel in a nice flat plane to cut 'em all in half.
Thats what we use to keep solicitors out of our neighborhood anyway.

depends on you purpose. if its home defense, consider a shotgun so it doesn't penetrate walls if you got kids in the next room. I prefer revolvers over automatics. You have more capacity with an automatic, but they require more maintenance. If you go with an automatic, stay away from reloads and cheap ammo. Right now all I got is a shotgun, 357 revolver and 38 for the wife.
I've also owned a taurus 38, S&W 45, and a Baretta 9m. The 9M was very accurate but the 45 had the better stopping power and is more durable. I could have used a longer barrel than the model I had. Couldn't hit shit compared to the 9m, but you don't have to be that accurate with a 45. I've also fired the Glock plenty. Ugly weapon but a good shooter.
The 38 was cheaper for target practice and the wife could handle it pretty well. Good enough for close range. 357 is a good choice if you want a revolver and the 38 ain't enough power for you since you can still use 38 ammo with the 357 for target practice. I mention that because if you like to shoot a lot, the cost of ammo is a factor. The 44 was just to big. Getting off a couple shots quickly could be a trick and takes some practice. But it looks cool....

Nice post...
Yeah, the 44 is just unusable in my opinion. Its too big to maneuver quickly and the kick is just ridiculous for any practical purposes. Sure it can take your head cleeeeeeean off, but you better hit 'em with that first shot or you are in trouble.
