I live in a "ticky" area and that's what we do, too. Burn a match, blow it out, and stick the hot end against its butt. However, it rarely works, unless it's just latched on. The main thing is to make sure you don't leave the head. If it's been there awhile, the head could literally be buried down in your skin. You gotta get it out, though. The school nurse always made our parents take us to the doctor if the head didn't come out, but my dad would just get a needle and tweezers and dig it out.
