It's easy.
First we were going to Iraq because there was a direct link to terrorists.
Then we were going to iraq because they had WMD's that posed an "iminent threat" to us. (remember those rockets that could fly 10 more feet than they were allowed? And the modified planes they had to spread biological gasses over whole cities? And the remote drones that could um.. really wail on us?)
Then we were going there to liberate iraq and spread democracy to promote stability in the region.
The last reason was also proposed by Wolfie while Reagan was in office. They laughed it off as being "too radical".
Opportunity knocked people, opportunity knocked.
