O.k. I went out tonight to have a meal at Chilis . I was dieing for some babyback ribs. So everything so so when we get done the waiter comes over with the ticket and promplty turns and walks across the room just watching us from a distance. I jokeingly say to my girl how much her half is . I divide the $31.02 ticket up and tell her she owes me $15.51 . She looks in her purse as if to pull out some money . I reach in my wallet and pull out a $50.00 bill and lay it on the table. The waiter almost gallops over to the table and picks it up off the table . Looks at me and says will you be wanting any change. I look up in amazement and say well YES! So I think about it while he is gone and say to myself and my girl should I tip or not , I ended up leaving him $5.00 ......What would you do?

Tipping in the US is voluntary. Not mandatory. With that said, it is customary if you get good service. Basic tip is 15% of your total tab. Given your financial resources at the time, $5 is okay, its better than the $0 you COULD have done if you wished.
In most of the world, tipping is NOT customary. Indeed, in China, during the Mao years, if you tipped, the waiter would get PISSED AT YOU for condescending to him. -
NICE GUY EDDIE: Okay, everybody cough up green for the little lady.
NICE GUY EDDIE: C'mon, throw in a buck.
MR. WHITE: Uh-uh. I don't tip.
NICE GUY EDDIE: Whaddaya mean you don't tip?
MR. WHITE: I don't believe in it.
NICE GUY EDDIE: You don't believe in tipping?
MR. PINK: I love this kid, he's a madman, this guy.
MR. BLONDE: Do you have any idea what these ladies make? They make shit.
MR. WHITE: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money, she can quit.
NICE GUY EDDIE: I don't even know a Jew who'd have the balls to say that. So let's get this straight. You never ever tip?
MR. WHITE: I don't tip because society says I gotta. I tip when somebody deserves a tip. When somebody really puts forth an effort, they deserve a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, that shit's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doin their job.
MR. BLUE: Our girl was nice.
MR. WHITE: Our girl was okay. She didn't do anything special.
MR. BLONDE: What's something special, take ya in the kitchen and suck your dick?
NICE GUY EDDIE: I'd go over twelve percent for that.
MR. WHITE Look, I ordered coffee. Now we've been here a long fuckin time, and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled six times.
MR. BLONDE: What if she's too busy?
MR. WHITE: The words "too busy" shouldn't be in a waitress's vocabulary.
NICE GUY EDDIE: Excuse me, Mr. White, but the last thing you need is another cup of coffee.
MR. WHITE: These ladies aren't starvin to death. They make minimum wage. When I worked for minimum wage, I wasn't lucky enough to have a job that society deemed tipworthy.
NICE GUY EDDIE: Ahh, now we're getting down to it. It's not just that he's a cheap bastard--
MR. ORANGE: --It is that too--
NICE GUY EDDIE: --It is that too. But it's also he couldn't get a waiter job. You talk like a pissed off dishwasher: "Fuck those hahahahas and their fucking tips."
MR. BLONDE: So you don't care that they're counting on your tip to live?
MR. WHITE: Do you know what this is? It's the world's smallest violin, playing just for the waitresses.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MR. BLONDE: You don't have any idea what you're talking about. These people bust their ass. This is a hard job.
MR. WHITE: So's working at McDonald's, but you don't feel the need to tip them. They're servin ya food, you should tip em. But no, society says tip these guys over here, but not those guys over there. That's bullshit.
MR. ORANGE: They work harder than the kids at McDonald's.
MR. WHITE: Oh yeah, I don't see them cleaning fryers.
MR. BROWN: These people are taxed on the tips they make. When you stiff 'em, you cost them money.
MR. BLONDE: Waitressing is the number one occupation for female non-college graduates in this country. It's the one jab basically any woman can get, and make a living on. The reason is because of tips.
MR. WHITE: Fuck all that. Hey, I'm very sorry that the government taxes their tips. That's fucked up. But that ain't my fault. it would appear that waitresses are just one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. You show me a paper says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it. Put it to a vote, I'll vote for it. But what I won't do is play ball. And this non- college bullshit you're telling me, I got two words for that: "Learn to fuckin type." Cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent, you're in for a big fuckin surprise.
MR. ORANGE: He's convinced me. Give me my dollar back.
JOE: Okay ramblers, let's get to rambling. Wait a minute, who didn't throw in?
MR. ORANGE: Mr. White.
JOE: Mr. White? Why?
MR. ORANGE: He don't tip.
JOE: He don't tip? You don't tip? Why?
MR. ORANGE: He don't believe in it.
JOE: He don't believe in it? You don't believe in it?
MR. ORANGE: Nope.
JOE: Shut up! Cough up the buck, ya cheap bastard, I paid for your goddamn breakfast.
MR. WHITE: Because you paid for the breakfast, I'm gonna tip. Normally I wouldn't.Comment

i work in a restaruant, i'm a chef, so i get to listen to people bitch about bad tips all day. here's how it is.
if my server is good i always leave AT least 20% the reason i like to tip high i because it's these's people livelyhoods, also if you frequent there, the next time you come back they will remember you and you will get twice the service.
if the service is shitty fuck em.
5 dollars on 31 is a good tip, it's right around what thy would hope to get on the meal, 10 - 15%. surprisingly enough, about 50% of people don't tip more than 5%.
so bottom line, at least 10% even if the service is sub standard, anything more than that, judge it for yourself. how much was their attentiveness worth to you?Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.Comment

We had a waitress screw us over the other day, and she was terrible service too.
There was several people at our table, and an $8 tip was left. Then we get up to the register and notice "tax" crossed out on the bill and "tip" written in. So that bitch got a double tip, and I noticed she scooped up that $8 pretty quick too.
I wonder how often this happens where people don't pay attention to the receipt and leave a tip on the table too?Comment

Anyway, she came back with new drinks. Bill was $39 so i gave her 40 and said keep the dollar.
She looked at me and said, this is all youre gonna tip me? I said yes, i shouldnt have tipped you anything but instead ask you for new cigarettes. She left while saying she wouldnt help us anymore.
Stupid bitch.
In a nightclub i ordered 1 drink, 6 bucks, gave 10, she kept the 4 bucks without asking me.

Thats what its like here, no one expects it, and if you do leave the change they look at you wierd. Also most often the tip here will go to the owner not the server. Here = Australia btw.
The times I've been to the US I have had good service 50% of the time, the other 50% its been shit, but it feels like you have to tip no matter what. I can understand tipping at restaurants, but I dont understand why you have to tip cab drivers? They get really shitty if you dont tip, even if they did nothing for you, half of them dont even say hello! Shit, in Australia if you give them a couple of bucks they will say thank you multiple times as you leave the car.Comment

I agree with Forest... not a good idea to PISS OFF the person who handles your food.
I had a buddy in high school who would get his rocks off fucking with pizza delivery guys. He would order pizza that is worth 15.80 and give the guy 16.00 payment... meaning he is giving 20 cents tip.
Anyway, my buddy quit his shenanigans when he saw pubic hair inside his next pepperoni pizza. Unfortunately... he saw it on the last slice remaining when much of the cheese was stripped and he saw the pubic hair.
You may not want to tip too much but don't under any circumstance piss off your food handler.

You are high. There are a few states that allow tipped employees to make less than minimum wage. Just a few. MOST states require everyone to be paid at least federal minumun wage, if not more. In Oregon our minimum legal wage will be $7.10 an hour of any employee, tipped or not. To avoid the min wage law, some strip joints were charging dancers a dance fee a few years back. This was ruled illegal also, and back pay was paid to all strippers who were involved in the law suits.Originally posted by Forest

My tipped employees make very good money, but just over half my customers tip. It is NOT MANDATORY. That is absurd. Just last week we went out for dinner. The waitress forgot my beer, forgot a shake. Never filled the water glasses. By the time she remembered the beer, it was after 1:30am so she couldnt bring it out. She remembered only because I asked about it after our food came. She brought us the bill to the wrong table so we were undercharged $20 until we showed the host the wrong bill. She got no tip, she deserved less than nothing. She made our experience less pleasureable than if we had waited on ourselves.
Tips are about appretiation and thanks, tips are about our feelings of gratiousness for the effort the staff puts out to make us happy, hence the word "gratuity".
Just because tips are expected doesnt mean they are manditory. Thats is exactly the reason I know some waitresses that make $200 a night and others that make $50 a night working the same hours at the same club. The $200 a night girls go out of their way to be nice and make sure the customer doesnt have to ask for anything and they are always watching the customer to make sure they are there for any reason. The $50 a night girls wait until the customer flags them down for a new drink, they stay off in the corner talking to each other an ignore their customers and then bitch about lousy tips.
Its all about service levels. Standard service should get tipped whatever you feel in your heart is right. Poor service should get nothing, or maybe a handful of pennies turned upside down in a glassful of water if you are a mean person. Good, attentive, out of the ordinary service that has anticipated your needs before you realize you need something should be tipped very well.
Of course the definition of poor and very well is determined by each persons state of being. If I am buying a $5 lunch and have normally good service, right now I would tip a buck. A few years ago when I was in a better place I would have tipped two bucks. But its not about what I would do, its about what each person feels they should do. By no means is it what they HAVE to do.Trade traffic with Totally4free TGP HERE

No, its a job like any other job.Comment

By no means is it what they HAVE to do.
bad service...
BUT if you go out feeling you dont have to tip your fucking cheap PERIOD!
Thanx man

Forest, why exactly do these guys deserve huge tips and people having other jobs dont?
Give me a good reason to tip waiters like mad so they can go home with triple the amount of what anybody else would make.
Are they forced to do this job? Is it hell on earth? Is it slavery?
No, its a job like any other job.
bacause a Pilot, or mechanic or whatever KNOWS at the end of the week what his salery is
a waitstaff DOESNT and wont know.
His job performance level is directly linked to his % of tip
and waiters DONT make that kind of money unless they are working in the best houses.
The average waiter in america Proably makes between 80-120 a shift in tips
Thats NOTHING!
and they are on their feet for 6-10 hours a shift and dealing with mostly ASSHOLES
dont you pay girls more for doing anal?

I always tip servers at least 25%... their income depends on tips and I can appreciate what they do. Even if I spend $20 bucks on lunch, I'll leave them $10 bucks. I also tip my hair dresser and delivery guys... I'm generous
If you think like that why dont you give money to the other 90% of americans who have a min wage?
Did it eve occur to you that thanks to people like you these guys get overpaid by far! They are making way more money then what they should for their job.
In Holland someone has to work more than a hour for what you tip a person to bring you a shitty sandwich.
You are honestly out of your mind.Comment

Again this is not true. Employees use a form to report to the IRS each week what they got paid in tips. If the amount is over $20 in a 4 week period they are taxed on it. The ONLY time a business is required to tax a persons sales is if they are found to have repeated lied to the IRS about their tip income. If you are caught, they go back for as long as they can and make you pay up to 8% of all sales. If you fill out your weekly tip forms correctly this will not be a problem. You speak like you know what you are talking about, and I honestly thing you know what you are talking about. But someone has fed you bad information that you have taken for the truth. So many of my employees have been told false things like this that you wouldnt believe.Originally posted by Forest
yeah but the service i have always had in holland was no where near as good as the service in NYC
PLus in europe they are paid a much bigger hourly or flat wage

No, its a job like any other job.
have you ever seen a rich waiter? I haven't.
you probably don't realize what it's like being on your feet for 4-12 hours straight running back and forth, dealing with asshole cooks, asshole manager and asshole customers. it's a hard job it's not easy.
and if they do make good money they had to work their bloody asses off for it.
I'd never be a waiter again, I'd rather collect cans out of the garbage. it's a hard job and therefore I appreciate the people who do it.Comment
