US blocks payout to Gulf war veterans

The Bush administration has blocked compensation for US soldiers captured and tortured during the first Gulf war, arguing that the money was now needed for Iraq's reconstruction, veterans' lawyers said yesterday.
Seventeen former prisoners of war were awarded nearly $1bn (£600m) in compensatory and punitive damages by a US federal court in July.

The awards were supposed to have been paid out of $1.7bn in seized Iraqi assets, but the administration stepped in to prevent them receiving the money on the grounds that it had been confiscated from the Iraqi government in March and was therefore the property of the US government.

It is a travesty as far as what happened to these 17 people.
As much as we may detest litigation, they did go to court and win their case against Iraqi assets.

For the Bush administration to grab this money and prevent payment is tantamount to highway robbery.

I truly hope that they go after the Bush administration legally and at the least, make these pigs in the administration oink big time and at the best, GET THEIR MONEY!

A better choice would have been Senator John McCain. "McCain's naval honors include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross." At least someone like him knows what war is all about. I doubt he would've screwed the veterans like that.
