Chicken pox, mono, shingles, are all in the same family as cold sores, but are completely different strains and unrelated to your outbreaks.
There are 2 types of herpes: simplex 1 and simplex 2. Herpes simplex 1 is usually above the waist (like cold sores), and simplex 2 is below (like genital herpes). Type 1 is very common and you probably got it when you were a little kid or baby. You may have a close family member(s) with it also. Around 70-80% of people have been exposed to type 1, but only 1/3 will have outbreaks and cold sores.
I had to do a paper/project in grad school about it, and I remember Lysine being one of the recommendations, but I can't remember what form, how much, etc. Your doctor can probably tell you.
