Smith, 43, who worked for Charles for 11 years until 1997, is quoted as saying he went to Diana to tell her he had allegedly witnessed the incident involving her husband.
He had earlier told the princess of the rape allegation and the Mail on Sunday said Diana made recordings of both conversations. Paul Burrell, Diana's butler, has previously confirmed the existence of the tape.
"I told Princess Diana the truth and I stand by my story," Smith says in the newspaper.
