At&t TDMA service is absolutely the best. Not even Verizon beats it...

I live in California and travel all over the place. I have had verizon, cingular and sprint. Sprint gets by far the best service nation-wide. Some phones might work better in certain areas, but sprint is best overall.

search gfy for my post on Verizon and their express network.

Verizon is hands down the best deal in the nation if you know which phone to get and how to work the de

But warning, AFAIK there is only one phone they offer that will give you this awesome "bonus"

Whatever you do, don't get Sprint. I have never talked to a Sprint customer longer than 5-10 minutes without getting cut off. Not good for relationships either: How ya' supposed to be romantic or even phone sex when you have to yell at the top of your lungs?!?

I think the answer varies significantly in different parts of the US. If you're in fairly central areas of cities with a quarter million or more people, I think all the major companies will work well. Also if you're on the major highways between cities, or at major airports, you should be okay. If those are your main destinations, then I'd base your decision more on price and features.

If you're going to be in smaller towns in the midwest, I've had best signal reception with verizon, although my sprint is digital-only, and maybe their dual-protocol phone would work as well as my verizon. Once you get 10 miles off of a main highway, into a sparsely populated area, service goes to analog, and 20 miles into the sticks you might not get any signal. If you actually live in the sticks, survey people around you about what they have and what sort of signal they get there.
