          Diabetes sucks Sorry Brent...

On a lighter note, products have come a long way. So it's easier than ever to live a normal and healthy life with it. Low carb is all the rave these days anyway So many new sugar free products on the market, makes for great eating for anyone, diabetic or not.

Walking is very important. 30-60 mins a day will do wonders for you and everyone... Get a treadmill if walking outdoors isnt appealing.

I know it's all easier said than done, but just know you it's not a death sentence unless you allow it to be. Take it seriously but keep your head up because it's not the end of the world... it's a new healthy beginning hopefully.

PS. Splenda is a great no calorie sugar substitute

I dont know you Brent but you have my best wishes dealing with this. Keep your head up and follow the doctors orders and you will be fine.

I have family members with it and they are leading normal lives.

OK something isn't kosher here, Tara went to pickup my paperwork from the doctors and I guess it's not diabetes now it is high cholesterol and they want me on the Lipid diet to lower my cholesterol.

So I am sorry I flipped out there but over the phone they said diabetes

So either way it goes I still need to get off my 240lb fat ass and get some exercise, time to play on the Crossbow machine hahaha

Ohh, Brent, I'm so sorry. That really sucks. But Furious_Female is correct, low-carb gets easier every day. I just tried these low-carb sugar-free chocolate ice cream bars called Carb Smart (they are made by Klondike!) and they RULE!

Also, if you like alot of sweets, try Davinci sugar-free syrups. They make dozens of flavors and they're all made with liquid Sucralose (Splenda) so they have 0 carbs and they are awesome! I love the Hazlenut and French Vanilla. My son loves milk with the French Vanilla in it. And for Thanksgiving and Christmas I'm going to get Eggnog flavor and make low-carb eggnog with heavy cream, the syrup and some nutmeg. Mmm

                      http://www.davincigourmet.com/749.html

Oh, and Mount Olive has some sugar free pickles out that are sweetend with Splenda. Makes having low carb devilled eggs nicer.

BrentD your living with diabetes, not dying for it tho. My ex of 16 years had it so I have learned alot about this disease.

My only recommendation, is avoid SUGAR FREE chocolate will give you the craps. Avoid it [most all sugar free sweets can be deadly]

Don't try to change eating all at once, do it gradual so you accept it without feeling deprived.

Blowing off this disease because you think you are getting away with eating what you want is false. Years from now when your feet are amputated you will realize that bill came due.

Attend educational classes and subscribe to the diabetes magazine.

Diabetes can be managed and never become a player in your life if you become the manager now.

Decisions and management now can offset the things that scare you associated with this disease.

YOU have the power :-))) Take control of this and go live a wonderful life.

                        Be well my friend.

103 is normal for sugar, was that after being managed?

239 is not all that high either, they like ya around 200, what matters is the ratio between good and bad cholestrol, one cannot go solely by this number....most folks are in the 300+ range and can be managed my meds.

Im diabetic also... since 18 actually. Its been pretty tough for me, I have type 1, so I have to inject often.

Its been getting better though and Im pretty positive I will have a normal life (healthwise) in the next few years... like someone here said, there have been many improvements of late that have helped our group of ppl. Good luck and stay safe, just be ready for your wife constant nagging about what you should and shouldnt do, lol!

Brent, My business partner was very over weight and suffered from bad health. He came to LA and that's when I talked him into REALLY eating healthy whole foods a doing a bit of exercise. After 4 months he had lost 50lbs and claimed that he had never felt so good in 30 years. The human body is very forgiving. If you treat it right (by eating good and a little exercise), you'll be better in no time.

my friend had high cholesterol and had high blood pressure, too. he worked out all the time, and he wasn't really very heavy, but he had them anyway. the thing that helped him the most was he stopped eating any red meat except the sarcastically lean hamburger occasionally. other than that, he ate white chicken, fish, no more egg yolk, no dark meat poultry, no shellfish or organ meats. he eats some of the tastier veggie burgers, too. and he eats an apple and a banana every day per his doctor.

you know what? a couple months after he gave up beef and eggs, he wasn't red anymore and he had lost some weight. a year later, he was almost down to normal, and now he actually is! if you don't have anything sinister in your body causing this, you could do this, too.

Best Wishes to you, Brent. It's not the end for you...you'll have to change your lifestyle, though. It's up to you now as far as how this disease progresses from this point forward and the most important thing will be controlling your blood sugars through total compliance with your diet, meds and following the physician's orders. What you do now with your body will have an effect on you in the years to come. You can avoid many of the diabetic complications (i.e. neuropathy, blindness, loss of limbs, etc.) by staying complicant and developing an almost rigid type of control over your blood sugars.

Use all the available resources around you to learn about this disease, the diet, everything you can. Educating yourself is the smartest thing you can do.

I've mentioned before I'm a RN...I currently work in the ER, but I set up a Diabetic Training Program at a small rural hospital in my hometown, so I do know something about this disease. If there is anything I can do to answer questions, etc., feel free to ICQ me. Good Luck
                                              No sig for you!

"The liver is one of the body's most complex chemical factories. It is responsible for modifying almost everything we consume so that the body can either utilize or eliminate it. In addition, the liver also modifies some of the body's waste products so that they can be recycled or gotten rid of. The scope of these contributions to the process we call metabolism is so broad that life without a liver is impossible.

Individual liver cells wear out and are replaced by new ones. As the old cells fail, they spill some of their metabolic enzymes into the blood. When a condition produces a greater than normal rate of liver cell death, the resultant level of enzymes in the blood rises. This is what your lab tests showed. Actually, as you might have guessed from the diverse range of things that the liver must metabolize, there are several different enzymes covered under the broad category of liver enzymes. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST, SGOT), Alamine aminotransferase (ALT, SGPT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), and total bilirubin are the ones that are most commonly checked for.

The liver tests your doctor ordered as part of your periodic exam may be elevated for a number of reasons. The specific enzymes and the degree of their elevation often helps direct the search for the cause of the liver injury. Since I don't have that information, I'll offer some general thoughts.

Liver injury sufficient to cause this problem can result from both prescription and non-prescription drugs. In the former category, cholesterol lowering medicines, particularly those in the statin family, blood pressure medicines, seizure drugs and antibiotics are capable of causing elevated liver enzymes. In the latter category, alcohol -- as you are aware -- is a common culprit. Also, acetaminophen, particularly if it's frequently taken with alcohol, can cause liver problems. Perhaps your problem is due to a drug that you are taking.

Another cause of enzyme elevation is infection. This can include infectious hepatitis (most commonly the A, B, or C type), AIDS and mononucleosis. Parasites can also invade the liver and, thereby, cause enzyme elevation.

Tumors of the liver cause cell destruction and, therefore, cause elevated enzymes. Both malignant and non-malignant ones can do this. "

For people with high blood pressure, hypertension experts are recommending no more than 2,300 mg of sodium a day. National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences recommends an approximate daily range of 1,100 to 3,300 mg of sodium for adults.

One of the big things that the hubby did when we got together (well it wasn't new to him) was he only buys salt free veggies etc. I didn't realize HOW much salt was in those things. And they taste the same with a normal salting after they are cooked. So that has to lower sodium alot! They don't cost anymore than the regular either.

There is a perk that not many do... you buy ground sirloin instead of hamburger-chuck or round. lol Alot less fat in that if its ground correctly. ;-) I was hollered at more than once for getting the wrong kind.
