    Video quality question for those in the know!

    I capture all my footage on a digital camcorder. The quality is outstanding. Then I use Ulead video studio to make my movies for my site. While the quailty is good, I need to try to make the file sizes smaller. Is there any "new" or "better" technology out there that you could tell me about?

    A standard 3 minute clip for me, is in the 20mb range now. Can I reduce that without sacrificing the quailty?

          Yeah use a better video editing software with higher end codecs to encode your video. I would suggest getting a mac personally I can easily encode video 320X240 with sound 30fps into about a 1.5 mb a minute.

                      I do believe that's what i said, i just suggested the mac as a latter thought since the best video editing software is mac platform and if you can't afford that iMovie is free and can handle your amateur digital video needs.

                          There is no question that Mac is the best for video editing...However...It is way overkill for web work. No need to spent the casheven to use iMovie. If you have a Mac..Great. If not and you are not doing high end pro stuff.....No need to waste the money.

                              It's not so expensive these days, I saw a pretty hot little deal on the apple store, it's a refurb G4 eMac for $579 with free shipping. Now for any amateur webmaster that's a pretty sweet little machine to work on.

                                  I know I am going to hear it , I would go to windows media 9. Thats what danni ashe uses and the quality is very good and the files arent huge. You can do clips on mm2 then its free and not bad at all.

                                          You are going to find that almost all off the shelf apps that do rendering will either give you bloated file sizes that no users are willing to wait to download or they will give you small file sizes with very poor quality. For example, look at the files in this page

                                          They were made with proprietary rendering algorithms and then dual pass modes with noise reduction and I frame manipulations. I don't think that these sort of things can be done with most off the shelf apps.

                                          You should try one of the guys that do rendering for a living. For example the Jason and Alex guys have done great work for a lot of people here in the past. Hit them up. They are more affordable than you think and it will be done quicker than you could do it yourself.

                                                                                  That's because you're a smart man, unlike so many of these people who just throw up some WMV 9 clips and don't know that 70% of the people out there can't watch their shit, then they don't know why no one rebills, or they have clips that take 56k users 4 hours to download just to see that there's no fucking in the clip.

                                                                                      Okay...I know that Ulead sucks. Can anyone point this simple little lady in the direction of what program I can use to make downloadable Mpg's like I do now, and give me the best quality for the least size!

                                                                                              I don't know what to tell you I use a mac and mac utilities. Maybe someone here will point you in the right direction for something small and cheap I guess.

                                                                                                      I like MACs. I used one at one time and it was fast and did not crash. But to own one I feel like I am being a rebel or something. When 98 percent of the world uses the PC it is not logical for me to use a MAC. And they are still much more expensive too.

                                                                                                              I don't think she wants to pay $500 for the software to do it though, at that point you could buy the mac for $579 with free shipping. She's probably looking for a solution under $150 and in that case I would say the Windows media as much as I hate it is probably the way to go with a cheap video utility which is really what she already is using. So maybe someone knows some shareware or utility in the under $150 price range that does decent editing and encoding.

Your machine is a tool not a toy if you're serious about your biz and it's worth the money you have to spend on it if it does the work you need, well, fast and stable.

                                                                                                                              I use Ulead too, but before editing the video, I put it throught EO video and play with the size ratio and sound quality. You can drop the file from 25mb to about 15 mb, depending on the combinations of compressions you use.

                                                                                                                                  I don't think there's much of a learning curve at all for someone who has a decent amount of knowledge but yeah it can take time on the front end but I think it saves you time on the backend. But hell why not know both like I do, I just prefer one.
