What would you say the average conversion is of surfers that click to the join button? I know it's a wide range but I really have no clue, I've always sent straight to join.

It depends on the traffic source.
Search Engine would have a higher % vs tgp or broker'd traffic.Comment

The whole range. Like I said, I've never sent to a main page where they have to click a join. I don't know if I should look for 1:2 or 1:500. I've always sold the sites myself and then sent to join. I agree that there's no meaningful answer to that question, too many variables, one of which is how you actually get your traffic to the site, which is going to vary greatly from site to site.
Here are my results from yesterday from two different sites from the same sponsor. This is niche SE traffic (mainly Google) that is sent straight to the sponsor with no preselling, or just through a standard sponsor HPA:
SEO 1: 3649 992 389 9 270.00
SEO 2: 11637 3347 1439 13 390.00
Here is the same sponsor, yet another site, but quite targetted PPC traffic sent through a reasonably good custom FPA (this one is for the week so far):
PPC: 695 294 231 14 420.00
... so as you can see there is a fair range... not that you probably didn't know that already.
