        I will clue you in. She was traveling in a convoy...the convoy made a wrong turn in a sand storm. The convoy was ambushed. The vehicle that she was a pasenger in ran into the back of a big rig that had been disabled...at a speed that caused severe injuries to her. Those left alive in the convoy when the engagement was over were taken prisoners. She will have crippling injuries for life and receives an 80% disability from the VA and will for the remainder of her life...unless with age...her injuries become more debilitating then she will be increased to a 100% disability. BTW

                True, the Vietnam Vets got shafted. As did many of the Gulf War Vets (remember Gulf War Syndrome?) It's also true that MANY of them are far more deserving of the title of hero than Ms. Lynch.

                Still - she was there, she went to war, they got captured, went through hell, etc, all while serving this country. Those are truths in and of themselves, regardless of comparison.

                A very good point was made re: why her and not the black girl. A VERY good point. However, I somehow don't think that Jessica Lynch is the mastermind behind that one. Or behind her being held up as the one who was the big hero. Blame the Bush PR machine, not Lynch.

                Why does anyone give a shit that she's making some cash? Just because others have done more/been through worse doesn't mean her ordeal wasn't real or meaningful.

                If a woman can make money for sucking cock and taking it up the ass (our business) why is there a problem with Lynch making some bling bling?

                                        Also, let's clarify something. The majority of the anti war movement was, in fact, a peaceful one, and supportive of the GI's. I mean, getting them home was a major part of the movement.

                                        However, there were also more militant arms of the movement. The nutballs who were more pro-Vietnam than pro-America - can you say Jane Fonda? I hardly find it unbelievable that those crazies would have a problem with spitting on American soldiers.

                                        Finally, with all respect to your Uncle (though you refuse to grant such to mine), he certainly wasn't everywhere. He can only say with certainty that he and those with him weren't spit on.

                                            FYI...she was not sold to the media...it is the media that initially hyped her story...based upon early reports...rumor...un-named sources...and sold it to the public. Hype/sensationalism and exploiltation is what the media does. It is not the government that gave her a book deal...it is not the government that is making a movie...it is free enterprise. People are going to make money off of her...and of course it is only fair that she in turn is paid some of that money.

                                            Bottom line...her "story" is about capitalism at work. Nothing new here. It has been mentioned here...what about other vets that had been prisoners of war...and/or were real heros. There have been several movies and books about some of those prisoners of wars and real heros. She is not the first one to get a movie or a book deal...and she will not be the last.

                                                    Personally I think the stories about spitters and the storys that say it was entirely a myth are, alternately, Republican and Liberal propoganda, and that the truth lies somewhere in between.

The girl is a hero she served honorably and will have debilitating injuries the rest of her life. One of the stories I read (I think it was ABC news) says she still has no control over her bowel movements. She must have been brutally sodomized to have suffered that much damage. But it doesn't have to be with this kind of crass commercialism. The heroism of American soldiers in Mogadishu was immortalized in "Black Hawk Down" without any six-figure advances. Her cashing in has already offended at least one family of a soldier who died in the ambush.

                                                                                Perhaps we shouldn't blame her for taking the windfall that has come her way--there are undoubtedly less deserving people who have fallen into money.                                                                                                                         Bottom line for me, still, is that I don't have a problem with her taking money offered to her. I don't see it a 'deal with the devil' or any other similar thing.

                                                                                                                        The average American would do the same if the chance arose, without having gone through what she did.

                                                                                                                        As for the comments from the one G.I.'s father, I can truly sympathize with his loss. But I feel his anger is misplaced, because it needs a place to go, and that's understandable. But somehow I feel if the positions were reversed and Lynch was his daughter, he would tell her to take the money.

You know, a paper pusher. A no-excel body that was just one of many bodies sucked into military service for economic reasons. A woman with no options better than some low-level job in the military. Yes, the military is a huge welfare program for lower class and working class kids who have no job, no future, no way of comfortably supporting themselves, and many of these young people turn to military service for instant paychecks, housing, medical insurance, cheap goods and services, and the assorted benefits that come after their service is over. Jessica Lynch had no immediate future, and that?s why she was a clerk in a maintenance unit in the Army. How dare the truth be spoken!'

                                                                                                                                If she was my daughter, I'd tell her to take the check. If she was raped, and will be disabled for the rest of her life, over a war I think is bullshit, damn right I'd tell her to take the cash.

                                                                                                                                What I wouldn't tell her to do is go out LOOKING for a book/movie deal. And I don't think Lynch did that.

                                                                                                                                But I'd grab the check for her and put it in a trust fund for her if she wouldn't take it herself.
