It is fucking cold here! As for french not speaking english, and vice-versa, Here I am a french canadian speaking english! This is so true. I was an American transferred up to Montreal for work. Our main office was in Montreal, where we were harrased by the language police, staff and client issues regarding the language. Customers pretending not to speak English or Understand French. Craziness and sooo counter productive.

We also had an office in Ottawa. Everyone seemed to speak both languages, flawlessly and without issue. The only way you could tell someone's origin was by looking at their last name.

Centuries old fight, started in Europe and continued across the pond.

And yes, Quebec rules.

but while I was in Spain, I ran into some AMERICANS PRETENDING to be CANADIANS!!! yeah that's right!!! these fockers were walking around with the CANADA flag sewn to their napsacks....

these guys were backpacking across Europe and I met them at a bar...so I started talking to them b/c I saw our flag on the bag and said "hey! I'm from Canada!! where u guys from???" the one guy started laughing and he said Boston!!! "We put the flag on our bags b/c everybody likes Canadians!!!"

pretty pathetic huh?? I do alot of travelling...and it seems everywhere that I've been, Americans are the most hated and are treated the worse...why???...b/c u have those ignorant ones that leave the country and set a bad example for the rest of you Good Americans and they've ruined u all....u have to admit it, u'r not very well liked as a country...

Odie, I lived in Europe for 4 years and I saw that all the time. Especially in Holland. It's because in a lot of parts of Holland, they love Canadians as we were the troops who liberated them in WWII.

Sorry ,but thats not true. For example , a recent study showed 95% of montrealers spoke at least 2 languages and over 50% spoke 3 or more . The vast majority of Canadians get along very well together but as everywhere , a very small minority of idiots make everyone else look bad.

Weather's fine in the spring/summer. Unfortunately there's no place in Canada you can escape the shitty winter weather.

I agree that everybody likes Canada (including me), and hates America......but the truth is, is that Canada is not a player in the international scene, they are not a world power in any way.....so there isn't anything for anyone to hate.

As for the whole country getting along so well.....wasn't Quebec trying to become it's own French-speaking country just recently?

Ok now I'm too curious... what IS the actual point of having two or more languages is one country? Bragging rights? I honestly can't think of any positive side to it other than cultural pride. But then I have never sat and thought about it. Too many things in life to wonder about and learn!

When you move to a country that speaks a different language it used to be a symbol of RESPECT to learn the native language. But then the lack of respect in everything seems to always rear its head.

But having two or three languages and then add in that many canNOT speak more than one (thinking of all the hispanics etc here) then it is a PROBLEM. We grew UP with English, so *I* should learn to speak some immigrants language or should they learn English? If they want to speak their own amongst themselves thats fine. But don't expect ME to speak theirs, just to tell them where the bathroom is. (UNLESS I worked in the travel, restaurant, and hotel business etc etc for travelers)

actually yes canada is a big player on the international scene... and always been seen as a mediator... thats why the USA was trying so hard to get them approve the war on Iraq....

As for Quebec, there's a separatist party that want Quebec to be its own country... however... the separatist movement is less and less popular right now... I would guess its at around 35% and 40% right now.... I dont think everyone in Canada is getting alone so well... but I would say they are getting along better then Democrats and Republicans

FYI, most french speaking people in Quebec can also speak English quite fluently. Unfortunately, it is not the case the other way.
In some way, i can understand that, since french is truly a difficult language to master.
As a french speaking person, it was always a priority for me to speak good english and I never missed an occasion to practice it.
