Most people's careers really start to take off in their 30s, unfortunately for women, this is also the time most of them are converted into baby factories for the next few years.

Unless women totally write off motherhood, it's sort of hard to give a position to a woman who may or may not need X amount of time off for having a baby. Not that it's her fault... but seriously, it's not easy to fill someone's place that's on leave in a top position. That's one factor in the sexist corporate world.
There's many reasons... the tides have been changing, the world just hasn't seen an equal amount or majority of women in top jobs. As time goes on, it will become more balanced... but not anytime soon. Women have chosen their careers as priority more and more over traditional things like marriage and raising families.... so the trend is on the rise. If this makes women happy, so be it... but if some of the women's lib advocates and players are just doing it to prove a point, it's not right. We know that women are equally as smart (if not smarter ) then men, but it's in our nature to be more emotional and nuturing, so it will never be "equal" unless women mimick men, which I don't find to be enjoyable. I don't need to spit and cuss like a sailor, wear business suits and lift 200 lb objects to prove my worth. I like being a woman... I like girlie stuff... I may compete and run amongst the men in this industry... but when it boils down to it, I don't want to be equal to them. I am content knowing that men and women are different physically and chemically. I am fine with this and I like it that way.
Yes I am a woman... but I think that men are natural born providers or at least they used to be. The job market isn't what it used to be, because women's lib kicked in 30-40 years ago and somewhere along the line, some women decided it was trendy to be a single working mother, competing with men for jobs. That's not a position I'd ever want to be in, because I know it would take a lot of sacrifice and stress to get to positions that are just handed to men.
Granted there are many many qualified and professional women in the world, that are more than capable of doing top level jobs that men do... however, I guarantee that they omitted some major things from their life, that a man wouldn't have to. A man can have his cake and eat it too.... but for women, it's usually one way or the other.
20-50 years from now, things will be much different. Women CEOs and presidents etc will be the norm. Who knows, maybe by then science will have found a way for men to give birth

personally i think women in the corporate world has definitely risen. will there be more women in power positions then men in the next 15 years? hard to say. i truely think it will be up to a woman to prove how much she wants whatever position she is going for. as it stands now, women work more hours for less pay and that i dont think is right.
i can say this, men have been a good role model (for me at least). i have really learned to prioritize what is important in my life because of being around men who know what they want and how to get it. 10 years ago i was just a mushy eyed 24 y/o who thought life began and ended with marriage. that has certainly changed now; i want to earn enough money so that if i ever do get married and have a kid (both are doubtful) and things dont work out, i want my life and my kid's life to remain as much the same as it had.
i see too many people divorcing and one is slinging the other through the mud financially. whatever you bring into a relationship, you take with you. whatever you accumulated during the relationship, you split fairly. if you have a kid, you both take care of it equally for a kid should never suffer.
in addition, doing things on your own and getting to that "on top" point gives me a feeling of accomplishment and that is rewarding. there is no there feeling in the world like not having to depend on someone.
so if women (and any other minority) just work hard (and it is hard work), get the affirmative action crap out of their minds, i believe you will see more women in a position of power. times have definitely changed since i graduated college. i think taking cues from men and watching they way the work in most cases is beneficial.
