My power supply fan started doing that shit a few weeks ago. The fan grinds and sounds awful when the computer starts up but after a while it smooths out. If it gets loud again, I just smack the bastard and the noise goes away. If that noise if coming from your CPU fan, I wouldn't fuck around, I'd just get a new fan.

Edit: First check to be sure the fan ismounted securely and the noise isn't just from vibration or a wire touching the blades.

Back up everything important now.

Depending on the size of your current drive you could do this easier than burning discs...

Since hard drives have gotten much bigger and cheaper the past couple/few years chances are you can buy a new hard drive that is much larger than the one you currently have. Install it as your main drive and install Windows and your other software.

Then, disconnect the IDE and power cables from your CD ROM and plug them into the old hard drive (you'll probably have to move the jumper pin on the old hard drive to slave). When you reboot the computer you can then browse the old drive and copy and move all of your important stuff over to the new drive.

Only took me losing my first hard drive to forever have a backup plan from then on

Try this. Grab a hammer or something solid and give the power supply a gentle tap from the back of the PC. You may have to smack it a few times. If it's the PS Fan, it'll quiet down when you smack it.

Chances are you can get a power supply fan for $50, depending on if you screwed up and bought some crappy Micron or something (not all those manufacturers are using standard sized parts). I run my PC constant, never turned off, so I replace my PS pretty regularly as most PS Fans are hardwired in and I'm smart enough not to go taking it apart and running for my solder iron.

It's not a steady click - click - click - click sound so it's probably not your HDD taking a shit. Start with the PS.

Don't even bother replacing the muffin fan (the fan inside the power supply)...CompUSA has power supplies for $30 give or take...

they last approx 3-4 years depending on conditions.

and contrary to popular belief...it is much better for your system to keep it on 24/7/365..the power consumption is minute, and your PC stays at a constant temp vs heating up and cooling down.
