An older dog is out of the puppy stage so you don't have to put up with all that irritating puppy stuff. They are probably (hopefully) also housebroken so no worries there. And if it is already used to kids, it won't mind getting its tail pulled or its eyes poked.
But like I said, the hard part is finding the time and energy to look around for a good one. Just a thought, I realize these kinds of dogs aren't for everyone.

True, but I would have to say definitely NOT worth the risk with a kid. My best friend as well as I had always gotten dogs from the pound, but the last time she did, she ended with a dog who ended up literally scalping her 7 year old son. After seeing that, I decided to save the dogs from the pound until my wee ones are a bit older, and stick with dogs I could raise and bring into the family from their start.
