There is tons of providers who offer reseller packages to begin with...its a safe easy way to get started..selling some virtuals etc...

i got hoehost.com..probably use it for 50-100gb ADULT virtual accounts.

First thing you do if you're in the US is get an AS # from Arin (www.arin.net) then you rent a cabinet at a colocation facility, you will want to hire a system/network engineer to initially setup your switches, routers, firewalls and servers, i can do this i've done it for 10 years. Then you decide what it is you want to sell, dedicated, virtual, co-location, both. You then pick at least 2 bandwidth providers who's names arent cogent, then you setup your little network in the colo facility, when you get around 1,000,000 dollars saved up, you build a state of the art datacenter, with a generator, ACs, UPS systems, high tech security and the like.

Thats how I would do it, actually thats how we did it lol.

These days you dont ask ARIN for an IP allocation before you got a couple of c-blocks in use, and by a couple, I mean a few

                                Take Luck!

Rule #1 in choosing a webhost in 2004: Dont choose a host that has to ask "how do you start out your own hosting business? " in the first place.

I said an AS number, not an IP allocation, so he can do BGP.

I?ve worked at one of the top hosting companies in the World for 5 years now? don?t get me wrong, I enjoy my job, we have happy customers.. but really I?m one of the few?.

                                      a) You deal with people?s shitty problems ALL day long.. it?s really too much pressure when a customer who pays $tons per month has his websites down because of some really careless mistake (yours or theirs)
                                      b) Too much competition? it?s next to impossible to make money when people are charging $0 - $10 per month for shared or VPS accounts? 1&1 selling dedicated servers for $49? where is the profit??
                                      c) Hackers will help you spend most what you do make on defending your Network from being attacked? really the script kiddies are out of control?.

If you really want to enter the Industry then so as the other posters say, rent a rack and co-lo some servers?. or Resell others better yet?

But really, if you?re technical and/or have business skills to run a company you may be better going into another field...

Only really makes sense if you have a couple of sites yourself and are trying to make something on extra space you have anyway; otherwise the reseller option looks pretty good, let someone else do all the work....by cable modem they are referring to having a static IP at home and hosting from your home computer and connection.

                                                  Yep.

Running a hosting company comes with a lot of work, a lot of money, and a lot of frustration. If you know absolutely nothing about the web hosting business, than don't waste your time and money getting into it. You'll only run into disaster after disaster.
