Some but not all. Many pound dogs are just fine. In fact, the best dogs I've ever had have been pound/shelter dogs. The hard part is looking and waiting for just the right one.
An older dog is out of the puppy stage so you don't have to put up with all that irritating puppy stuff. They are probably (hopefully) also housebroken so no worries there. And if it is already used to kids, it won't mind getting its tail pulled or its eyes poked.
But like I said, the hard part is finding the time and energy to look around for a good one. Just a thought, I realize these kinds of dogs aren't for everyone.
