in BJJ I own weightlifters on a regular basis.
The problem with gym muscle is that it's not practical muscle, it's not applicable to real movements, and when a big guy needs to move all that muscle can slow him down and it also makes him gas out a lot faster.
I've worked a little construction in my day, and I can remember being awed by old stringy alcoholic looking guys who could throw 4 pallets of roofing tile on their shoulder and climb a ladder like it was nothing, while I would have to take one rung at a time with just ONE pallet on my shoulder. They have effective muscle instead of show muscle, it makes all the difference in the world.
Thin wiry guys are also known for being damn hard punchers.
