    Info for newbie paysite people...

I posted this on a couple other boards and figured I'd bring it here too. There's a ton of smart people on here who I am sure can add plenty of wisdom to this but for what it's worth, my yadda yadda on it:

HOW FAST CAN YOU GROW AN ADULT PAYSITE?

Everyone wants to know how much they should expect to spend, how many members they can get, what to do for traffic, etc... The answers are as varied as the niches we work with but I am going to try to explain this as simply as I can in a way that will cover the most varied situations. Here goes...

    Type of Traffic to Pursue:

    1) Direct traffic purchase - the fastest way to get members is to buy traffic directly to the site. The problem here is that you have to sift through scammer traffic and even when you get it down to honest sources you can still only expect about 1 or 2 in ten of them to convert well enough with your site to be profitable. So trying to grow your site via this method generally requires a lot of funds because you lose money on 8 or 9, keep one. Next month you buy 10 more and lose money on 8 or 9, keep one... etc.... You end up after months with a good bunch of traffic and not having to throw money away anymore but it cost a lot to get there.

    2) TGP/MGP spamming - you can submit your site to the gamut of TGPs and/or MGPs and get lots of free traffic which helps. The downside (especially with MGP) is it uses alot of bandwidth and it usually converts very poorly. You also need a different type of tour to work best with this kind of traffic so if you are doing other means of traffic generating listed here you probably need more than one tour. It's a time consuming venture but again, it's free traffic so many people go this way to start.

    3) Affiliates - in the long run this will be your biggest gain because you are making your dollars work for you rather than work for your dollars. It takes a good few hundred affiliates before you see any real tangible results usually and it takes a good six months to a year to get plenty of people. You have to have sites they are willing to try and you have to have a webmaster program site they will be impressed enough with (including enough ad materials, etc...). All this ads up and can be costly but, done right, it will be your primary means of growth in the long run. [A self-spamming note here: if you are interested in a conversation about whether to run pay per sign or referral % or per click, see my ebook at http://www.lumyr.com/ebook]

    4) Feeder sites - you can get traffic by sending it from sites you already own or build. Have your own TGP or some free sites. A link list. Whatever it takes. There are many people that build their own "free" sites first and then get enough traffic to feed their own paysite and thusly do well with little money. It's these people that often have newbies mistakenly thinking they can get rich on a paysite with little money and little time. Someone with a big "feeder" site going into a paysite project to start will make money on day one. If you are starting a paysite first then you have to slog through steps 1 - 3 instead. You can always build feeder sites, of course... but that's more time and expense, so just make sure you realize that.

    5) Networking - last but not least is how you can get free traffic via good old fashion horse trading. Do you have content you shoot? Can you program? Do you do design? Trade some work with people for some traffic. Or trade exits. Or whatever you can do. Make as many friends as you can. Be a board whore. Whatever it is. The better you are at making friends online, the quicker you will grow your site on trades. This is another area in which people get mislead into thinking this is a get rich quick biz. Because some people are just astounding at networking and others just don't have the knack. The former can grow fast, the latter my never get there. You're always just a few deals away from the bling. =]

    Expected Growth:

So the next question I get is, "how many sign ups per day can I expect?" That's just too variable a question to answer properly. If you have $50,000 per month to burn and are great at networking you can set a goal of 50 per day and it's reasonable. If you have no budget and have to rely on time spent doing TGP submissions, you might only get 2 per day. So why do I even bring this up? To make this point... and it's a big one:

Look at the steps above and decide which ones you are equipped to pursue. Then set goals for yourself on how much time to spend on them or how much money to spend and stick to those goals. Be diligent! Don't say you want 10 sign ups per day then wonder why you don't have them if you only spent 3 hours all week networking or working on submissions. Your effort will equal your return. Sometimes you find your efforts in one area aren't working well (let's say TGP submissions are not working out). So you have to adjust. There's more than one way to get there. If the submissions aren't working either think up a TGP type tour or choose fro the other options above to focus your time on. "Real world" companies go through millions in ads and commercials not knowing what the results will be right off. You try and measure the results then you keep what worked and rework what didn't.

    In Closing:

All that said, the original question of the post was "HOW FAST CAN YOU GROW AN ADULT PAYSITE?" My answer is that it varies according to how much time and money you have but in almost all instances where you don't own a big feeder site or sites, it will take you a good six months to a year to see reasonable profits. How much you lose in that beginning period depends on how aggressive you are with the costly steps, but that also directly relates to how big the profits will eventually be.

So I hope that long winded babble helps some people see a clearer picture. As I said, I'm sure there are plenty of you out there with many intelligent comments to add. My experience is certainly not the only one. =] Make use of it for what it's worth to ya'...

Wow $50,000k a month expenses for 1,500 joins a month seems crazy to me.

But all the info seems good.

That's not really an answerable question unfortunately. Because if you are someone who has lots of friends in the biz already and can make trades for content and get traffic from your own feeder site than you could make a site that turns profit for almost nothing. But if you just hop into the biz from the offline world, you are going to have to spend on content and traffic, etc... Also enough profit for one person might be terrible for another.

This isn't like openeing a McDonalds, there is no tight range of parameters that work. Hence why you can get advice from 10 guys and get all of it will conflict based on their experience. That's why I make a big point to mention how many different levels of people I have worked with in so many different situations. Like I said I don't nearly know it all but I at least have a wider view than average because I get data from so many differing sources.

Let's say you spend $50k per month and get those 1500 joins. We'll draw up an example based on some averages that I'm sure will get lots of argument because so many guys have such varying numbers but:

                    1500 Trials at $4.95 = $7425
                    33% Trial to Full at $29.95 = $14,975
80% Retention of those members gives you a breakdown:
                    Month 2 - $11,980
                    MOnth 3 - $9544
                    Month 4 - $7667

and so on... You figure in exits and upsells and you're making some money but not huge profit there. So my joins per day number was kinda conservative (or what big companies would be so big?) but you get the idea I hope... I was just trying to say that if you spend more (wisely!) you will grow accordingly.

well i mostly agree i read the top half, but the thing with affiliates if u have a real good product and one that u know is viably marketable its pointless to have tone of affiliates, people will oversaturate your program in months time. i would rather keep things private.

Like I said lots of people with different experiences. =] Some huge programs have continued to do well for a very long time despite the fact that their exposure is so huge. Some burn out quick. It's a whacky biz.

I get more upset when I hear about people buying "turnkey" sites that aren't told they need to actually have TRAFFIC to make them work. =[ So many people read an ad somewhere and think it's a quick way to get rich and toomany other people prey on that. =[ It's not too infrequently that I end up talking sa potential client out of building a paysite because of their limited resources. SOmetimes they want to go on anyway and try it on e ashoestring and I do my best but I never try to paint this totally rosey picture for people when their situation won't be one.

i said paysite owners with a good new product, u obviously dont have one if you cant understand that.

Having met and hung out with Mark and had the incredible opportunity to even shoot the shit with him; I have to say he's one of the best, most knowledgable, helpful people I've met in this biz in my years in it. Not even mentioning some of the amazing models he's shot or his insane design skills.

I just think is kinda sad I hear stories of people paying for 10k designs and consultation, then end up sitting on a $500 design and no traffic with a real bad taste in thier mouth for the adult biz.
I don't think they can blame anyone but themselves for that kind of situation. There are so many adult webmaster boards where they can get advice. When I started out in '98, the biz was hit or miss. Now, at least there are board with good info.

I've bought gobs of content so far, now I'm buying up some exclusive shoots. And I'm also trying to get together the money for MPA2. I want to get it open, but I also want to do it right. I'm not opening it until I have MPA2 (I refuse to open without it) and until I feel I have enough of the right content. I am also going to make most of the members area by hand because I want to retain. Plus, I plan to spend "beaucoup" money on exclusive content to update regularly after it opens.

Their content isn't organized in a sensible way, it's not categorized properly, the thumbnail pages are ugly and the thumbs are often distorted or poorly compressed, etc.

By making it by hand instead of using a script, I can be sure it's all organized the way I want it to be organized, I have control over how the thumbs look and how they are arranged, I can add some text blurb about the different sets instead of just adding random pics. I want as much control as possible to make the experience as user-friendly as possible.

For amateur sites, there's no point in having your content pushed by hundreds of affiliates who can't make a sale. You're better off doing the work yourself or hiring someone, keeping all the profits & still getting accepted at the TGPs since they're not sick of seeing you.

Megasites with tons of different girls is one thing...but if it's a single-girl site, I think you're better off with fewer affiliates.

Like I said, everyone has different experiences. I hesitate to give anyone the numebrs that I see on average with my own work because then people think I'm bull shitting them. But I can tell you this, with a good processing solution, lots of content and the right design you can get better numbers than what I posted. Any major player will concur. The problem is most people run paysites that don't offer much more than an AVS anymore.

There's 100 lame paysites for every good one whereas about 5 years ago it was much tighter. So now you see the majority of guys on the board talking about shit numbers and people think that's what they can expect. That's what you can expect if you don't have a paysite stacked full of content. But if you build one right you can hit some pretty good numbers.

Kudos to tootie for wanting to do things right. To add to my babble above, far too many people don't even think about offering a quality product, then they wonder why they have cruddy numbers. I guess this comes from how easy people made money before and it's made people forget that you have to offer something people actually WANT to pay for.

SOmeone else above mentioned numbers vary by niche as well and I'd like to concur that is very true.

No matter what niche it is, if you don't update ocntent regularly and if the content is lame or overused then it won't hold members.
