The on-line sale of a Scottish castle closed after its website attracted more than two million hits.
The auction of Lee Castle in south Lanarkshire has drawn worldwide interest and nearly 40 formal offers have been made, officials said.Organisers of the auction confirmed that a lead offer by an American man was now being considered by executors of the estate.
They refused to identify the mystery buyer but denied that Hollywood star John Travolta was among bidders for the 700-year-old pile. Officials also confirmed that the asking price of £8.5 million has not been met yet by any of the 39 bidders.
Web consultant, Nassim Tahzib - who operates leecastle.com - said from California: "This fantasy is about a dream which is real.
"It has captured the imagination of people worldwide. Every grown-up has fantasised about being a Cinderella or owning a castle or being a baron.
"Out of the 39 offers we received, we are now considering a lead bid by an American who we cannot identify. The result will be announced next Friday."
The winning bidder will assume an ancient noble title becoming 35th Baron or Baroness of Lee, following a proclamation by the Lord Lyon King of Arms in Edinburgh.
He or she will acquire a fully furnished castle with all its historic and antique contents and heirlooms.
They include priceless centuries-old tapestries, three furnished lodge houses and 261 acres of land.
The Barony even comes with its own 25-member band The Pipes and Drums of The Barony of Lee. The interested parties have until 12 noon on Friday, November 7, to legitimise their bids in Scottish law with a solicitor in Scotland.
