Anyone got a Canon EOS-300D? (AKA Digital Rebel)

Been reading several reviews of this model and it looks like a fantastic quality camera for the price. Unfortunately Canon Australia doesn't seem to have caught up with the US dollar weakening - the Australian RRP of $AUD1999 converts to about $USD1399 which is 40% higher than the US RRP of $USD999.

I've been using my wife's Minolta 404si (film) SLR for a few years, and a few months ago got a cheap Canon Powershot digital on sale. Having digital has spoiled me: I'm sick of having to finish the roll of film before I can process it, I'm sick of dropping it off and picking it up, I'm sick of scanning in the pics, I'm sick of storing pouches of photos and negatives.

Even though Canon's cheapest digital SLR is about 4 times the price of a typical film SLR I figure in the long run I will save money, because I only need to print the specific shots I really want in hard copy format (the local Kmart prints digital shots at a cheaper price than the average per-shot cost of film and processing). The other big advantage is that I can take a lot more photos and quietly delete the bad ones once I download them to the PC. With film they are all developed and printed regardless.

I've been looking at quite a few sample shots and the quality of the full size images is excellent. How large can a full size 3072x2048 image be printed at before it starts showing up pixel edging?

Any comments about this camera (or similarly priced digital SLRs) are appreciated. Remember I'm looking at a 'prosumer' camera, I like to have more control over everything but my budget, needs or skills are nowhere near professional...

A few people I know have bought them, and they are extremely pleased with them. I'm looking into getting one myself. Fantastic little cameras, especially in the price range.. They're knocking the bottom right out of digital.

      *bump*

Thanks for the reply LadyMischief, your comments are in line with just about everything else I've read on that camera.

One thing I'll need to get used to is not being able to use the LCD as a viewfinder...

        I have recently purchased a canon 300V [not D].
The 300D is a great camera, and as you pointed out, a fantastic digital entry point.

However, there is one thing abotu the 300D that prevented my from buying it [and indeed made me choose to go to film] - and that's the fact that it isn't a full frame dSLR.

What this means is that, unlike a normal 35mm film camera, the sensor in the 300D is not 35mm, which means when you put lenses on it, there is a focal length factor of 1.6x

If you're into taking outdoor shots or portraits, or things where zooming is a bonus, then this camera works to your advantage. Ie, you put on a 75-300, and it turns into a 120-480 - very cool.

If you shoot wide angle, it sucks.
say you pay a few grand for a 17-40mm - that turns into a 27-64 - a lens that would cost maybe $200 tops.

        essentially, that's your only consideration.

poster sizes depend on the dpi of what you print at
most printers [inkjet] range from 150 - 600 Dpi
        so 3000x3000 @ 300dpi = 10" x 10" - very nice indeed.

also.. you can take your digital media into most stores, pop it in a magic fuji fulm machine, and it prints out on real photo paper.. magically doing different sizes without pixelation.

        hope this help :D

I ended up getting the Canon 10D but as the salesman was going through all of the different price ranges he said the Rebel was one of the best buys in it's price range.

I've been researching this quite a bit myself lately.. IMHO the 300D is "the camera you buy when you can't afford the 10D". I'd much prefer the 10D (actually, I'd really prefer the EOS-1Ds, but monkeys will fly outta my butt before I can afford that anytime soon).

www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au has them fairly cheap, but last time I rang them they were on backorder and would take a "few weeks" to arrive. If you're in Brisbane, Photo Continental has them for about AUD$100 more, but they were out of stock on the weekend too (they claim they're selling a couple every day).

I'm not 100% convinced that the 300D has enough software features to keep me happy. One of the biggest concerns I have is whether you can manually change the metering mode. I've had a read through the manual PDF file and its not very clear on this point, it reads like there are different metering modes, but the metering mode depends on the shooting mode, and you cant override the default metering..

But still, even if I could afford the 10D, which I can't, I couldn't afford decent lenses for it. The 300D at least comes with that nifty EF-S lens, which seems capable of producing some pretty decent quality results.. check out www.dpreview.com for the sample pics in their review.

or you can go into rainers camera house in brisbane, speak to micheal, and tell him quantum-x sent you :P

the 300d / v have different metering modes.. in a round about fashion.

ie, in full auto it has X metering zones, change to semi manual [av / tv] and it has different metering zones, and if you shoot manual it has even less .. so semi spot.

              shrug :D

Yeah thats what I thought I'm a little unimpressed that it doesnt include a spot metering mode, but since I couldn't change to that metering mode while I was in Tv/Av mode anyhow, it doesnt really matter. *sigh*

Damn, I wish megamart did price matching for online stores. I had a play with the camera last night, but they have it listed at the standard $AUD1999 RRP, which as I said in my first msg is excessively high compared to the USD RRP.

I'm wondering whether waiting for a month or two is worth it - will the price come down, or will the demand go up......

Eh, I like the EOS... flashy looking cam, plus there's plenty of underwater housings for 'em.

Either that or a D100, which I didn't really wanna spend on.
