Nikon D100

I just spent $3000 all told on my new digital camera and am still learning how to use it. I take a lot of photos that look just great in the camera playback, but once I upload them to my computer, they are dark. I can barely see anything. Then I use IPhoto Plus 4 to lighten them up 60% and they look washed out.

Right, how you "lighten" them makes a big difference.... Looks like they are a bit under exposed to start with, and the D10 imports images darker than what shows on the LCD on the camera, I am not sure of the D100.

Anyway, a few minor corrections and I got this.......

Try some shots in full auto mode. Don't try being a pro photographer until you understand the mechanics and effects of every setting on your camera or you'll just frustrate yourself to death trying to get perfect results.

Something isn't set right in your camera based on looking at those shots.

Full auto is harder to figure out what you are doing wrong if things go wrong.

if you move closer and then farther away from the subject during the shoot using full auto, you take the chance of getting all levels of exposure from over to under.

If you shoot everything in the "photo set" at one exposure, then editing is a lot easier and can be done in batches.. especially if your exposure is close to begin with.

Besides, if they look good in the camera back, then a stop or two darker in the computer, it's simple, kick the aperture open a stop or two in the camera, and your images should be fine in the computer.

If that doesn't work, hire a pro. LOL

nikon deliberately underexposes a bit with their pro cameras so you don't burn out images. (at least with d1 and d1x anyway).

make sure your monitor is calibrated.

best to go to <dpreview.com> and adjust your monitor using their grey level chart.

make sure you use the sRGB colorspace for web work, and then tweak the exposure as necessary.

check the D100 review and the samples that Phil Askey shot with the camera. note the tech details on individual shots and the EV settings---you'll see that many times he tweaks the exposure compensation to get the "right" exposure out of the camera. this is important to do, because having to adjust gamma after the fact will wash out your images.

match his exposure compensation and you should see exposures on your monitor comparable to what you see on the dpreview website.

in my opinion the D100 is a good camera for web work.

I just bought a Nikon Coolpix 5700 and i'm having some chalenge with with lighting myself. I wanted to go SLR - but i'm new at this, so maybe when i'm getting more pro i'll think about a Canon 10D or something similar.

Go to http://www.mediachance.com/ I just bought their DCE Tools. They are photoshop filters that do an excellent job of fixing photos. They also have standalone versions and you can try alot of them for free.

Im guessing the pics you posted are after the lightening on Iphoto? they look fucked ...

This cam will kick ass in auto mode and if your lighting is low you can just let more light in ... press the +/- button and then there is a scroll dial in front ... dick around with that

Also, if these photos you posted are after processing in IPhoto, (i certainly hope they arent coming off the cam like that) then maybe check the color on your monitor

hey Deepundercover,
i'll be glad to try to help you but i need some info i think. first of all in what settings did you take the photos? just send me an exif data of the picture you've taken and seems wrong. then i'll might be helping you...

nikon makes the settings of the picture taken to underexpose on purpose not to blow out the highlights...highlights are all lost and dark areas can be recovered because they have the information from ccd. that's why they do it i think. but you have some other problem because i have a D100, too and having perfect photos with it. so send me some info and we'll see what is wrong.

DUC, sell your equipment. Your pictures look like crap.

Buy a Canon G-5.

Nikons are great, but they are not as easy to use as the Canons. Unless you are willing to take classes and learn how to use your Nikon equipment, you are just wasting your time. You can't expect webmasters to solve your problems in one or two messages. GO TO SANTA MONICA COLLEGE. Take an extension class.

Agree! I bought a new camera last week and was planning on getting a Nikon until the sales man showed me the difference and let me play with them in the store. Ended up buying a Canon EOS 10D and LOVE it.

Ithink in this world the people divided into Canon users, Nikon users and others... I don't agree with you as a nikon user and i think canon's menu system is a bit confusing... this is just like nokia and sony-ericsson users and rest in the cell phone world and pc and mac users in the comp. world....everyone got their share by that way...
