To Webcam or to Video Cam?

Im am curious, if a person wanted to setup a live feed from say their place for their site, is it better to have a video digital camcorder or would a webcam suffice? Also, any views on webcam32 software or is there something better to make it work?

    Thanks

This is something I'm most interested in knowing also. If someone would be so kind as to instruct me on how to set-up streaming vidz on my site, please. I have already embedded some clips, yet I also need to broadcast live directly from my site. I have a sony250 digital cam, not the best by any means but excellent transmission and crisp clear on a cable connection.

I would greatly appreciate your instruction as to how to accomplish this.

    Thank you,

I use a camcorder a sharp view cam HI8, with remote, The logitech 4000 is a good cam for USB if you are cheap or cant afford a real good camera to start out with. I only use the USB cams for guest cams.

You need video software to run the cams on your site or you can even use yahoo here is a link to the types of video cam software you can use for your sites. There are many choices from free software going all the way up into the thousands just depends on how much $ you want to spend :-)

The good thing about running a video cam is that you can easily record the show, and then sell those videos later. With a web cam you would have to record the show to your Hard Drive - which means that your performance will suffer, not to mention your disk drive space .

Also , most video recorders already have built in zoom and remotes.

To stream the content - you are going to need some sort of software. Windows Media Server is a good option.

Or yes, you can use Yahoo, etc. But that will limit your ability to sell the content , down the road.

Canon VCC4 webcam, top of the line, excellent quality and remote capabilities as well as user remote control abilities. We use 3 of them.

If you can, you should definitely use a video camera instead of a webcam. The problem there is that then you (might) need a video capture card. But capture cards can be had super cheap. Not only are there functional advantages (zoom, etc.) to using a real camera, but the optics are generally better and you have way more control over the image.

Analog video cameras are cheap and used ones are even cheaper. If you don't want to do digital, you might consider getting a cheap, used 8mm camera off ebay. If you want to be able to convert your videotape to digital (online) video files, you might want to go with a cheap Digital8 cam -- cheap format, cheap tapes, and you get a built-in firewire port without the price of a true DV cam. Email me if you have any other questions.

I think you should first think of a budget that's right for you. Below $100 you should go with a webcam apparently. Above $1000 you could order Canon's pan-and-zoom cameras that come with their own web server.

If you fall in between those two numbers, it's a really tough choice - maybe the eBay recommendation makes the most sense.
