Sure, they could stop building houses in canyons that are known to be at high risk from wild fires. They'll stop doing that right around the same time they stop building houses on the banks of rivers with huge flood plains too.

wonder why the trees haven't been touched yet all the houses are burnt to the ground... here in aus generally the trees burn first then the houses.

And does no one build with brick there or what? Maybe it's zoomed out too far to tell, but it looks like there's nothing left of the houses but ash. You'd think you could see some foundation too, unless they are all single level homes.

They might try and pull the 'Act of God' Clause out.. dunno if you can do that for bush fires, but they don't like paying out for crazy weather conditions, it's way too expensive!

i live in san diego.. and it was pretty crazy here for a few days

it's really hard to explain how chaotic it was.. even the pictures cant explain it.

it was like californias own personal 9/11

people everywhere in gas masks.. almost every freeway closed.. the sun was red for 2 days.. it seemed like the end of the world.

it's calming down a bit though.. blue skies today..

The part that puzzles me, is why the heck people are there to answer the cop knock to tell you to GET OUT FOOL. They were showing news video here (quite a few) of ridealongs and the fire is like 200 yds from a house and this idiot answers the door in pj's with coffee in his hand?!?!?

THEN he says oh gosh do I *have* to leave> I have to grab this that and the dawg, kids, wife yadda yadda...

Whats the death toll now from people not scooting when they KNEW the fire was coming in their direction?! If we knew a tornado was coming 2-3-4-5-6-7-8 hrs ahead of its arrival we'd be long gone!!!! How about the day BEFORE when the wind is blowing ashes at you when the fire is 2 miles away??

fire has to be one of the worst things that can happen. There's nothing to salvage there... it's all just gone. And even if insurance pays for it, that's still not gonna get these people started again.

no kidding, a few years ago my mother in law's place - just down the balcony from us - got totally burned out. It was my job to go in and sort through the stuff and do a catalog for the insurance folks. I developed almost a smoker's cough (I don't smoke) from my week in the burned out place that comes back whenever I am in a smokey or overly dusty place.

However, next to my mother in law who was on life support for a while, lost her home of 30+ years, her beloved cat that woke her up so that she didn't die before it died and a zillion and one memories.

The wiring in her place was old and blew up her tv..landlords just moved her to a tiny flat rather than the two story place she had.

After all that, I can't think of anything worse than a fire.
