$79/mo for ded server w/ 1000Gb, and managed? How much lower will prices go?

I thought unitedcolo was cheap ($99/1000Gb), just ran across this... has anyone heard of this company before (or their parent theplanet.net)? I'm wondering how they can afford to provide a managed dedicated server, "up to" 3Mbit/sec of average bandwidth, and no setup fee?

    http://www.servermatrix.com/servers.html

Am I right in thinking this is ultra cheap (TOO cheap) or have I spent too long between checking out hosting prices?

That's low enough to scare me off. I know I wouldn't "manage" your shit too well for $79 a month, that's for sure.

Webair will match that offer, so go with them and you'll get great support.

That just doesn't add up. Usually when things don't add up you end up getting what you paid for and nothing more.

i was gonna buy a box with them a couple weeks ago. i sent them an e-mail asking about bandwidth overage and this is what i got ->
"Bandwidth is $1.00 a GB overage, normally $1.50 a GB."
In their faq it says .50, so i don't know.
I never bought the box, instead i got one from rack shack and I've been very happy with it so far.
Hey, if you do get it, let me know how it's doing. I could always use an extra $79 1000/gig server for movie galleries or something
Anyway, I've never heard anything about them - good or bad.
It'll be great if you could keep us posted though.
          blah blah blah...

Server Matrix is owned by The Planet which runs two state of the art NOCs in Dallas. I've had a dedicated with them since March for a high traffic non-adult site. Execellent uptime... pings and support.

Server Matrix is the budget end of the deal... same bandwidth and support. Phones are answered in 2-3 rings 24/7.

Do a search on Web Hosting Talk in the dedicated server forum on The Planet or Server Matrix.

These people are pros. Rayelene is my rep there... tell her George from Vegas sent you. She'll take care of you.

                              well
                              usually id say:
You get what you pay for.

                              but considering the price

                              what you gotto lose??
                              $79

                              you cannot really lose more...
downtime while transfering sites doesnt happen no more these days (at least it should)

I dunno, even with economies of scale, I don't see the bandwidth price going down that much. Perhaps they depend upon the fact that not everybody, or hardly anybody is going to push their stuff to 1000gb a month. If the customer pushes that much, they can just kick them for some bullshit violation of TOS or something at their leisure. Probably similar to gyms that sell 5000 memberships, but never have to worry about the gym being over filled because most people don't use it enough.

im not sure if im right, but some one said something about a new data center out, and they are giving really really really low prices for bandwidth to get customers, this might be them?

hmm... 79.95$ for a 1,000 gb server, but when you click get quote and check 1,500 gb server it's an extra 250$?

Prices look nice on alot of hosts out there but the thing that ticks me off is the tiny ass hard drives they give you, who can run a content biz on a 40-80GB drive?

Right now CD Media runs off of 1x40GB and 2x120GB with just 2500+ titles and I still got over 300+ titles to add right now.

These companies who want to sell to adult need to start considering the hard drive space and up it to at least 120GB if they want alot of adult customers. INstead of sure we'll add a 120gb drive to your server for another $100 setup fee and another $29 a month added to your bill, hmmm, so your saying that in a years timke I would have paid for this hard drive 4 times?

Thats another good thing about phatservers, when I started they wheeled and deal and we got a good setup and when I needed more hard drives, they simply pay the price of the drive and we'll put it in, my monthly didn't raise at all.

Yeah, I have to agree, there is definitely something to be said about testing. ;) I've used BSD more than I've used Linux on certain machines over the years. The stats are quite skewed because 3 years ago, the 2.0 linux kernel was still not quite up to par, weak VM, TCP stack, etc., so it should be pretty much no contest as expected. The 2.4 kernel finally even is comparable to BSD and 2.6 has better scalability in certain aspects. I haven't tested anything on gig eth, nor seen any benchmarks, so I can't really comment on that. Do you know of any studies offhand?

But point being, unlike a couple of years ago, Linux should be 'good enough'. And it's only 3 mbit anyway, so I guess it just doesn't matter anyway.

Thing is , is these cheap companies couldnt sustain if gobs of adult webmasters signed up. They make the money off the dude who buys the server and gets 3 hits per day to is website. If it was all adult webmasters using all the bandwith that is alloted they would lose thier ass. So i doubt they will cater you you.

I read their AUP and TOS and only saw no cp, warez, or illegal stuff... which of course no host is going to allow. I didn't see anything specifically pertaining to no adult at all. It couldn't hurt to ask. As far as those servers, I wouldn't want to put all my eggs in one basket, especially a possibly sketchy basket such as them.

                                                                  http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/accuracy.html#whichos

Thus it is not possible to see a HP-UX, Linux or Solaris system with an uptime measurement above 497 days.

I wouldn't expect an old Linux kernel to beat out an old BSD system under load, but netcraft isn't a good source of info for OS stability.

Very reliable and great support over there. They're in the Infomart in Dallas, which is a huge tech building with LOTS of bandwidth going into it, very nice environmental controls, generators, etc. I've physically been to the building many, many times.

                                                                      1) FreeBSD - yes they will install it on the $79 plan, but it requires extra time (I presume they have several servers preconfigured)

                                                                      2) Overage / prepurchase of gigs - I pointed out to them that paying an extra $250 for 1500 gigs (+500 gigs @$2/gig) in advance was pretty silly when you could just pay $0.50 overage on the 1000Gb plan. The reply was that the signup form will be corrected, but they didn't clarify what the actual extra/overage prices were.

                                                                      3) They do allow adult according to their FAQ.

Note that there is also no ability to upgrade since 500 Gigs extra is too overpriced.

So overall, this is a decent price for this kind of business model, if the fixed plans fit your needs.

I got back a reply from them and the correct overage rate is $0.50, which is reasonable given the super low pricing for the first 1000Gb. Just ordered a FreeBSD server on the $79 plan...

And cpanel is very much worth getting, from my point of view since I've decided that the default webmin is tough to use...

If these prices were warranted don't you think we'd all be offering them? or at least someone you've heard of would be offering them?

agreed, in the beginning companies were extremely overpriced, but now that the mci's, global corssings, and other tier one carriers that we purchase from have come down to reality price wise, i think we've pretty much gone as low as it's going to go...

                                                                                                    just my opinion though =)
