British Telecom Blocks Access to Child Porn Site

British Telecom has taken the unprecedented step of blocking all illegal child pornography websites in a crackdown on abuse online. The decision by Britain's largest high-speed internet provider will lead to the first mass censorship of the web attempted in a Western democracy

I think this is definitly a good decision but this leaves room to abuse from them ...

Yea.. tis open to abuse, though probably not via BT - we have plenty "clout" there right at the top and they could not stand another session of "ear bashing" from us! BT are fine - ya just have to plow thru the crap "formalities" :-)

But yea... this is a danger in some other areas/countries!

There is also the prospect of "policy" which may not exactly be the policy of the ISP, but some government shit imposed on them, whether formaly recognised/declared or not :-)

There are laws - use em!!

Sometimes... eg in an instance I won't say here, but the names are known on GFY, enforcement just leaves these sites up to "trade" a while - since there is much more involved and info to gather before acting - but they will act and there is no reason to be speaking to, or have the "input" from any ISP.

well, that might be all and good but in the UK recently we had the family of a murdered woman (who willingly met a man for sex that included strangulation) demand the shut down of all sites that protray any violence against women - including bondage. So, while it might be a good thing in this one case it is worth watching to see what flood gates it opens.

That's the EXACT problem that lies beneath American Society. We play like Majority Rules, but that's just BS.

Exhibit A: We had Halloween parties taken away from our grammar school because some family (THE MINORITY) moved to town that had a problem with it.

Exhibit B: We had the Pledge of Allegiance pulled from our public schools because a MINORITY had a problem with its use of the word GOD (which this nation was founded under... which is what the pledge says...)

We bow to the minority in nearly every case. That'll come next in the internet. The MINORITY (let's face it, the vast majority of the cattle surfs porn... be it TV, Rentals, Internet) will eventually organize and come after the whole damn industry. i dont see a problem, they are blocking illegal content, if they knew about it and kept providing access to child porn they would be guilty of supplying it. as long as they are only blocking illegal stuff i think its a good move
