The IPO would only make a certain percentage of the company public. I imagine that Page and Brin will keep a significant percentage of the shares to themselves, so MS would have to pay more than $14 billion for a direct buyout unless they just want partial ownership.Originally posted by sweet7

It would be very bad if MS purchased Google.
As it stands on MSN.com search right now, for any regular search term you have to wade through a page and a half of paid listings to get to any actual search results.
MS would want to make some money off the largest search engine in the world, so I would expect that they would start throwing out the paid listings into the regular results (not the ad-words on the right or the clearly marked top listings in google).
Before you know it, what used to be a great, no-money-needed search engine has become another bought and paid for commercial tool.
