It does work. There were a bunch of theories about why it worked. Scientists were stumped. You could eat as much as you want and lose weight. It seemed to defy the laws of science. Atkins came up with a bunch of theories. Ketosis, breathing and peeing out calories. That was proved to be untrue. He also had a theory about how fats and protein involved a more complex process of being converted into energy than carbohydrates, which is true, i think, but he believed more calories were burned during this process. That was also proved to be false.
So scientists still couldn't figure out what was going on. But then one researcher finally noticed something. Even though people in their tests on the atkins diet were told they could eat as much as they want, they were actually eating fewer calories than the other people on the test on the regular low fat/high carb diets.
Long story short, a guy in Sweden or Denmark, can't remember which, discovered that Protein fills people up quicker, and for longer. Your appetite is satisfied with less food than on a traditional diet.
Simple as that.
The best option would be a high protein and low fat diet. That would work really well.
