Browsers look for an icon file - look at your browser's location window right now - see the yellow and blue check mark graphic next to the URL? that's one of them..
assuming you are using IE or Netscape... -

favicon is a small icon you see if you add a site to your bookmarks or use Mozilla Firefox.
Nothing to worry about unless you want to put a little symbol of your site for bookmarkersComment

favicon.ico doesnt always appear in IE though when you save a page as a favSIG TOO SMALL! Maximum 1200x600 button and no more than 30 text lines of ALL SIZES and COLORS. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 6240x4800 instead of a 1024x800.Comment

I think it may have something to do with where they're saved. I know mine get deleted when I clear my temp files and cookies. Maybe if you set up another path and put them in a permanent folder, they'll stay. I don't know if IE or your browser gives you the option. 16X16. I think 32X32 will scale down, as well.
