Maybe you don't like my design because it's just that good -- you feel inferior to all my bling bling abilities.

How is the weight lopsided? Because the sky is empty? You're not taking into consideration the surrounding HTML/text either... if you took the horizon lines into the HTML all the way to the edge and did the whole background of the screen the same colors the balance would be pretty badass I think...

I think most people read from left to right... Why is that inappropriate to see the "ENTER" link as the last thing in the visual flow?

Yeah the black/white pulls you along there, among other things...

I admit the car there is pretty distracting, but I was very careful how I put it there -- I even distorted the car a little so that I could hit the horizon the way I wanted to and still hit the bottom edge without showing the messy details like the license plate, etc... In reality, I think we are talking about some pretty edgy stuff... and I don't take this design THAT seriously to be honest -- although this is all very fun -- BUT that said, since this is a collage -- the car really makes you aware that it is a collage, and even the perspective of the laptop of off and the slight wierdness of scale and position I was hoping would throw off the viewer... I think it is a good idea to take a person's notion of reality -- and fuck with it A LITTLE BIT -- but not too much -- so they wonder why I fucked with them just THIS MUCH and not a WHOLE BUNCH... Cezanne does this with his lines -- if you notice he will have an object in front of a straight line but the line is not really straight -- but it's just OFF a little bit, and the intent is clear -- it's just enough to fuck with your head... and that's what I think intelligent design does -- it throws you off balance a little bit so you have to scratch your chin a little bit and say, "Hmmm..." Hence my "mental institution" style of GFY posting...

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure I heard Lensman say in a D-Money interview about Playboy was real picky about this... I could be wrong though... Anyway, I suppose I'm learning that the designer in many cases in this biz is also responsible for the wording of marketing text -- which is pretty sad I think... but that's always good to know -- I'm learning... The whole Playboy thing -- that's for Neriah to figure out with Playboy... and I'm sure she is thinking about her strategy with Playboy as the marketplace changes... if she really wants to be a Playmate, why not just put some ears on her damn head... Hehe... anyway you could look at it from different angles -- maybe guys will think -- "Why join this site when I could join Playboy.com and get the same pics + all the other Playmates?" If I was her I think I would present the Playboy issue as receiving an award -- show the date -- and show is more as an accolade and less as being under somebody's umbrella of power... because I'm sure there is that stigma to some extent... clinging on too hard to the Playboy logo could be seen as weakness, especially considering that Playboy is nothing without these models and the fact that she is a name to remember gives her some well-deserved superiority... and no I'm not kissing ass -- because I rarely have nice things to say about models... all you have to do is look at her pics...

I designed it at a much higher resolution so I could render it at any size... Generally for the first page of a tour I don't think you need a HUGE image -- and like I said I would incorporate the design into the HTML layout... I can seriously see your point, and I suggested that to Neriah when I first started talking to her about this before the design contest -- but I got carried away with the horizontal theme since that's how I do many of my drawings and paintings -- so that's sortof my trademark style... so yeah I'm guilty of the emphasis on the horizon and the long format with the wierd left-to-right composition... It's unique to me and interesting and that's why I like it.

I agree to some extent. I'm not really taking advantage of the "digital" aspect of the image -- I'm not using filters or fancy fonts... because at least in my circle -- those things are seen as tacky and unoriginal... but looking at the reaction that Hamlet got with with his shiny blue emboss-like effect -- people go for shit that shines -- and that's exactly why comic books and cartoons go WAY overboard on shiny swords and chrome robots... I suppose that's just part of popular culture now and I need to get with the times -- just go with it instead of trying to fight it...

Anyway, I've been acting like an ass in this thread but it's all in good fun -- and I'm glad this thread has been so popular and I'm sure Neriah will get lots of webmasters interested in her product because of this thread... My tactics are very controversial but you can all go fuck yourselfs...

I appreciate these comments -- especially from very talented graphic designers... I really don't take this contest that seriously -- and I think anyone with a little wit can see that just be reading my posts with a grain of salt...

yes. if you're looking for trouble and you have a really big wallet As somebody said, maybe you can use the words "playboy" and "playmate" because she earned that title and goes with her, it 's part of her identity and cannot be denied. Now, fooling with logos, which she's no right to use unless she wants to spends loads of money in courts to MAYBE try to prove her right to use them, is simply playing with fire. That's why I decided to use only the words and a subtle bunny ears, no mention to isotypes or logotypes whatsoever, no legal problems at all.

that sofide post was me, I couldn't remember my pass as I was on another PC and I made another temp nickname. My site was Sex-o-pedia, just in case and it was big when most of GFY users were at school

now, if you want me to defend my design (you know, you weren't the only one attending school, only that I attended Advertisement & Marketing Media) here you go:

Tecnically, my design is a diptic, just made to fit 800x600 rez (then the design shows nothing but her face and the enter link) and if you have higher rez or wanna see more (this means that it requires the viewer interactivity), then you see her beautiful chest, some "almost subliminal" words and a graphical and psychological invitation to go up to the word ENTER. There are only 4 elements: her name, herself, the enter link and this graphic trick to make your eyes go up. And this is not a tour, just a splash page, as requested. I really could say what is wrong with your design from marketing and psychology, because remember that there are differences between "art" and "commercial art", but I prefer to focus on my stuff and not enter a technical debate, because there's no point and it's very boring to the public

btw, I've seen your pictures and I like them a lot, I know you're an artist, cheers to you

and about the "eighties" thing... even when you're wrong, it wouldn't be bad, in any case it would be "trendy" and "up with the times" since there's a revival of eighties in design, fashion, music, and art in general, leave the cave for 5 minutes, you bear(d) boy

Thanks I hope you can see that mine is just the begining of an idea that gets tweaked with different thumbs and text or whatever to make it suit your site more. One of the reasons I started going crazy in this thread -- I was reading about art critics last week -- very fascinating stuff -- and I realized there was no art-discussion on the web that I knew of -- I had some ideas which I'd rather not give away for free -- but anyhow I'm glad to see deeper perspectives on GFY into the thinking behind what goes into these designs...

And I have no clue about commercial design -- and I like it that way :p
