Wonder if California asked help ... We have quite a few, and I think you can use salt water from the ocean...
------------------------------
It takes only 12 seconds, travelling at 130 km/h (70 knots) to scoop up the 6137-litre (1621-US gallon) water load. This requires an on-water distance of only 410 metres (1350 feet). The Bombardier 415 can scoop water from sites as shallow as 2 metres (6.5 feet) and 90 metres (300 feet) wide. This means that a great number of water sites can be used to reload its tanks. The aircraft doesn't need a completely straight scooping path. Since it's still in "flying" mode while scooping, the pilots can maneuver the Bombardier 415 around river bends or avoid visible obstacles in the water. As well, if the water site is too small for a full pick-up, the Bombardier 415 can take a partial load and return to the fire.
Scooping Speed: 130 km/hr (70 kts)
Scooping Time: 12 sec.
Water Volume Scooped: 6137 litre (1621 USG)
Water Mass Scooped: 6124 kg (13,500 lb)
Water Pickup Distance: 410 m (1350 ft)
Total Distance*: 1340 m (4400 ft)
*include descent from 15 m (50 ft) and climbout to 15 m (50 ft)
Aircraft in service in February 2000

I think most people just have no clue what the 'Santa Ana Winds' really are.
I mean people see it on the news but dont really know until you feel them.
Those winds come in and MOVE things man, these are powerful currents of dry desert wind blowing in, some excess 60 miles an hour maybe more not sure. The Santa Anas blow over trees for the fuck of it, mix that power with fire and we have a problem.
That wind whipping through the valleys and around mountains and hills is like pumping oxygen into the mouth of the beast.
this ones gonna hurt.

I don't think the pic of the firefighter with a hose sends the wrong message to the public.
It tells *me* that he's willing to do whatever it takes, even use a garden hose, to try to save lives and properties.
I heard a news story this morning on the radio where a group of houses there are prevented from clearing out the brush around their homes because of the kangaroo mice that live there.
One man cut a firebreak in the brush on his own property as the fire was bearing down on him and his house, and then fled.
When he came back, his house was the *only* one in the neighborhood that was still standing. There were roasted kangaroo mice everywhere - except for in his yard.
And while he was standing there, the Fish & Game Wildlife service pulled up and gave him a citation and fine for breaking their rules and cutting down his brush because he endangered the lives of the kangaroo mice.
Never mind that
a. He had saved his home and property
b. The brush he cut was on his own property
c. The mice were going to die anyway from the fire and because of his efforts, the ones that made it to his yard were able to survive
d. The kangaroo mouse is *not* an endangered species.
Fucking insane.
You guys out there stay safe and when they tell you to get out, fucking GO. Your house can be rebuilt, it's not worth your life.Comment

I remember being in Berkeley during the Oakland Hills Firestorm in 1991. I watched it for several hours as it started way back in the hills and marched towards where I was. I could see the homes burning on the hills by late afternoon. Burned over 2500 homes. damn scary shit.
This one looks even worse, because the winds died after the first day. If the Santa Anas keep going for several more days, lot's of homes are going to be gone.Somebody stole my damn signture...Comment

I was on the freeway where the 5 meets the 118, and caught a horrible view of the side of a hillside just blaring in flames. It had its back to me but the flames were creeping up the side of it consuming it.
smoke literally trailing the entire horizon.
from right to left, nothing but a big trail of smoke from dark black at the base near the flames to the clouds going out over the ocean that were white.
scary shit. for real.

In all the pics I'm looking at on the Yahoo site, they keep saying it jumped the highway; and in one pic showed what looked like at least a 6-lane highway.
How in the world did it jump that? Were there trees in the median? Unleared culverts going under it, maybe?
I know fire can jump some pretty impressive distances, but across a huge 6-lane highway?Comment

Pretty sad ... The officials said that houses were still having wood shingles as roof instead of " terra cota " tiles...Originally posted by Carrie
Damn.
The fire came up on the back of this house and is working its way to the front.
This one has wood( or seems like it). A small debris brought by the wind on the roof, and it's gone.
This is major: people died, but not only houses are gone but the whole neighborhood...

you cant outrun the wind that is blowing the fire ahead of you. how can you outrun such a thing? you cant. all it takes is a burning leaf to make it across the 6 lanes and your neighborhood just encountered a very big problem.
as I said above, if you dont know what the santa ana winds are, its hard to grasp whats going on. you do because you know.
those winds are fueling this thing beyond belief. not to mention spreading ash and starting more fires. they get an area under control and the winds shift and ignite something else.
rather tough battle.

Oh my god!
Just turned on CNN to see if they were reporting on it, and a caller was on saying that all flights into San Diego are cancelled and all flights out are delayed at least 1-2 hours.
Then he pauses, and says "Howard Stern RULES, you bitch!!"
The female desk anchor chuckled and said she knew that was going to happen, every once in a while you get a real JACKASS on the air.
They went to commercial real quick after that

Thanks to the fires we can expect mudslides this winter/spring if we get any real rain. Many of the areas that have burned or are threatened are horse communities. A friend of mine helps in horse rescues for the Riverside county Sherriffs, she has been busy all weekend long.ICQ#: 142295729Comment

'Entire neighborhoods in the foothills near San Bernardino were set afire late Saturday night. On Sunday morning, some residents who had fled the fires returned to their smoky streets and looked with horror at the widespread damage.
"A lot of people stayed until the smoke got so bad that they had to leave," said Nick Johnson, whose home was spared. "They just had to grab things and go."
Many residents rushed to a local airport hangar that has become the area's largest center for refugees from the wildfires. More than 1,000 waited anxiously there Sunday for news about their homes. Hundreds of cots lined the cavernous room. Some residents arrived dragging garbage bags stuffed with clothes. Some wept as they looked over a front-page headline in a local newspaper that said, "CITY BURNS." Elderly residents in wheelchairs evacuated from nursing homes sat in silent dismay. Children carried goldfish bowls and rubbed their eyes.
"It's been pretty rough here," said Ron Neish, a chaplain for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. "We have people who have lost everything." Rich and Dolly Boron had been on the run since Saturday evening, when local officials called their home and ordered them to leave. They went to stay at a nearby friend's house -- but had to evacuate there, too. Then they came to the airport hangar with their four dogs and everything they could pack into their truck. They had no idea if their home had burned.
"You never get everything you want to take," Rich Boron said as thick plumes of gray smoke drifted across the skyline.
"We keep thinking of stuff we forgot," Dolly Boron said.'

We used to have a vacation place up near Big Bear / Lake Arrowhead. I heard their were fires near Crestline which is right near there. Can't find much info on it online specific to that area.
Anyone hear anything more on that area?
You'd think with all the technology there'd be a way to manufacture gigantic fireproof tarps that you could seal down your house with or something along those lines.

It wasn't as massive, but I was in Santa Barbara during the Painted Cave fire of 1990. I burned a swath about a mile wide from the top of San Marcos Pass to the ocean in about 2 hours - about 5 miles long. It crossed the 101 freeway without pausing. 440 houses, 28 appartment complexes, and 30 other structures were gone in a matter of hours. The speed was amazing.Originally posted by VideoJ

WHY ARE THEY not covering this part of the fire on the news.
Porter Ranch is only a hop skip and a jump from me, and if it keeps coming this way it will surely come into the vallety.

Not covering it on the news I guess because they're too busy talking about the democratic debates *rolls eyes* and whether or not Arnold is going to tour the burned-out areas.
If they're not reporting on it, maybe you should head out to a high spot and see what you can see?Comment

OK. Mom's going to stick her head in here:
For EVERYONE - Scan your pictures onto CD's and/or keep the negatives and put them in a different location (or several different locations). Ditto with important papers such as birth certificates, passports, divorce papers, deed to the house, etc. Remember that YOU and your family are the most important things. Period. When my son was growing up I'd tell him over and over again that I would replace ANYTHING that was destroyed in a fire so if we had one there was NO need to try to save anything.
We had a fire on our mountain just a couple of weeks ago. We've had 5 fires in 30 years so we're very lucky, but due to the distance from fire stations, all homes have burned to the ground. Ironically, the last house burned the day before we opened our own volunteer station on the moutain.
For those there now - if you're told to leave - LEAVE, OK? Nothing's worth your life.

Damn. I lived in Calabasas during the snta monica mountain fires, then moved to Northridge in Porter Ranch. in 1998/1999. We woke up one morning with our house filled with smoke (we left the windows open at night) Looked out back and a block behind us there was fire in the mountains.. all the way up to the edge of the community.
This is NOT FUN!
Those pics of porter Ranch brought back memories of the whole thing. My thoughts and prayers are with anyone in the area effected right now.
We still have many friends out there...SharkyComment
