So stealing cable is bad but taking that is ok. I suppose hacking a private satellite network is legal as well if your home just so happens to be close enough to a business to pick up the signal. Tell that to a judge.
I tell you what -- some people tried to hack someone else's wireless connection at the Internext Convention -- but they had it passworded so they couldn't get in. Beats paying $1500 or whatever for internet provided by the convention. ;)

Why do you have to say something like this. Go back to Russia? I am not from Russia. This was a simple debate regarding the definition of theft and an encoded signal. It has nothing to do with limiting freedom or Russia.

Ok about this pointing bullshit, it DOESNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

If you point at something at the sky it is completely legal. Your argument only works if you cant get the signal for whatever reason, so you decide to hack the satellite, and change its orbit so that now you could receive it. Now you are tampering with them. But pointing something at the sky is not tampering, so it can't be illegal.

        Take Luck!

everybody needs to remember that sleazydream is in canada, and canadian law is pretty clear that any signal (such as satellite) that is being broadcast can be descrambled and used in any non-commercial way a person sees fit.

america on the other hand extorts billions of dollars from tax payers to develop a space program and billions from tax payers to develop satellite technology only to then charge taxpayers a monthly fee to access the signals being transmitted from those satellites.

And I can point my lap top at a wireless network hack it and its not illegal either. Same damn thing. Its a signal regardless.

If you read my post more carefully you will see that I only addressed pointing, so yes you could point your laptop at my wireless network and if it was unprotected use it to your will, since I am sending my signal out. I never mentioned hacking, decoding, or anything further, I was merely pointing out that pointing a satellite dish in and of itself is not a criminal act. Hell maybe you pointed it at thier satellites for a science experiment attempting to convert their signal into heat or electricity what the fuck do I know?

Yea that may be true to some that think that way, In reality T.V. period was made for the public, Not by some dumb ass fcc regulators that want to own everthing. and they wonder why we have hackers, hackers for cable box's, satellite dishes, internet, cellular phone hackers the list goes on an on. If you think about it without fcc rules, would their be such a thing as a hacker. Maby maby not.

Well I think leaving the curtains open for the world to see would violate every obscenity law in the book lol. But watching people have sex in the privacy of their home, from a distant telescope is a bit different than intercepting a service that a company sells. If we had sex and got paid for people watching, it would be a different story, because that's sort of like watching drive-in movies from a hilltop and I am not sure how illegal that is or how illegal voyeurism is. Could be against the law in some communities.

By the way... are people really too cheap to pay $100 for TV? I think the cheapest package DirecTV has is like $39.95 a month. I pay like $110 for all the extra channels I have, but there's always something on!

PS. Just because something isn't illegal in Canada, doesn't mean they are exempt from being extradited to the US on federal charges.

Those bastards(DTV) I put up a nice round dish on my house so birds can stop and rest on it and now I get nothing but trash on my TV. Their crappy signal is aimed at my dish( that I paid for not them) and envading my property. I think they should send their signal thur cable

The above story never happen FYI

I think this thread is getting really ignorant. It's like this people, DTV has a license from the FCC to broadcast programming via leased space on sattelites and charge their SUBSCRIBERS a fee to decode their proprietory signals. Those of us don't subscribe and who have the skills to build a parabolic antenna (dish), point it in the right direction, and build a decoder can view the signals without the tv-police coming looking for us. DTV makes their money off their subscribers that don't know how to decode the signals themselves. The resellers that got busted selling the decoders were forced to rat out their customers info, which I think is bullshit. But, they fucked up. DTV has every right, just like you and me, to go after damages if they think they can get it.

Ironically, their area of coverage is called a "footprint". I don't like being stepped on.

                                  u guys are missing it..

the reason what DTV is doing is fucked up is because you are guilty in their eyes, for buying or owning a smart card reader which of course has legit uses, just like a freaking cd burner, u can do legal or illegal things.

they raided a bunch of places selling this type of equipment and got their customer lists and now are sending extortion letters to anyone on the list demaning $3500 or legal action will take place. THE DMCA allows them to do this and there are many class action suites against DTV..

There is no proof on DTV's end that you took this device, found some software, used the software with the device and then programed their smart cards.. hence you are guilty if you own a smart card reader/writer..

i dont know about you guys but this isnt the right way to go about taken care of this prob.

the RIAA has picked up this tatic and began sueing people who where downloading music off of p2p networks..

whats next? MPAA or Software Companies get a hold of CD Burners liste and start sueing you because you own a device that can burn their software and use it illegally?

come on guys. this is bs.. guilty or not.

This situation teaches you that if you're going to purchase something deemed illegal to:

                                          a) Purchase it from a company based on a remote island.
                                          b) Send a money order....never use check or CC.
                                          c) Have it sent to a false name.

                                          Trust Me...

They wouldn't be in my sig if they didn't convert well!

Ok it is there problem I agree. And if you don't like the strong arm tactics they are using attempting to stop piracy tough shit. Its there problem they are dealing with it.

Why would I have to explain if its legal to decode cable? Its not legal. The only places that tell you its legal are the places selling the illegal boxes.

As far as old satellites I know little about them so I can not comment on your claim that they pick up EVERY channel and decode it. I wasn't even aware they could do that with the new signal nor do I care.

It is legal to descramble cable, assuming you are paying for the wires coming into your house (you didn't go physically tresspass their property by connecting yourself). If you move into an Apt. or new house and the wires are already turned on and ran and you notify them of this, you can do whatever with it to your hearts content. It cracks me up when the cable company does "Audits" on the apartment complex I live in, and tries to get people to pay for cable since they moved in just because the damned cable company was too lazy to disconnect the wires when the previous tenant moved out. Or maybe it's not lazy, perhaps they are doing this maliciously? Hmm...

The DMCA may have changed this somewhat, but I believe the FCC rules may take precendence.

Selling the descramblers may be illegal (i.e. in many states it's LEGAL to operate a radar detector, but ILLEGAL to sell them. Go figure.), but using one is not.

The same probably goes for dtv. If the military is broadcasting an encrypted stream of data via satelight across my house/land, I can take that signal in and decrypt it to my hears content. However, I can't share the information I obtained, or use it for commercial gain in any way. For my personal use though, it's perfectly acceptable. However, along the same token I can't make devices capable of decoding this, and offering them up for sale. That is the part that would be illegal, the second it stops being a personal at-home use I lose a lot of natural rights I would otherwise have. Just as commercial speech is not protected in the same way as other speech.

Most people are being brainwashed into thinking they don't have their basic rights by Government/MPAA/RIAA/etc. It's actually a pretty sad state of affairs in my opinion. America was built on the "cowboys" just operating on fucking common sense, too bad that artificial laws are being put in place to totally contradict this natural phenomenon.

                                                              Ah well.

That said, I do indeed pay for directv service. My time to figure out how to descramble the signals sent to me is more valuable than the monthly subscription price, in my opinion. Now some 16 year old kid or old retiree may have a much differnent opinion, and I won't try to take away their natural rights to do whatever one wishes in his home damned home.
