With hardly an exception, a nation's foreign policy aims to increase its influence in the world through alliances and ideas both economically and militarily. The US is true to this rule.
As far as freedom, was fighting to contain the spread of communism a fight for our future freedom? Was fighting to keep Saddam from occupying Kuwait and possibly Saudi Arabia fighting for our future freedom? Were Canadians , Australians and Americans even fighting for their freedom in Europe during World War II? All of these would be suppositions based on a guess as to "what will happen next".
