What kind of car is it? Different engines have different power bands, small engines require high reving to move. Big engines have more torque, so they don't need to be reved as high.
Honda S2000 for instance needs to be taken to 7,000 to REALLY move. But a Corvette for instance would only need 2,000 realistically.
As a general rule of thumb, American transmissions go out quickly, along with all the other parts too. Honda's literally will last forever... and I'm not exadurating. My '92 Civic has 220k miles and I drive it fast, but not hard, and it's never had any major problems and runs great to this day.
