    State claiming I owe back taxes and penalties since '98

    not Hawaii... a different state... got their bill today... it's a rather hefty one too.

    problem is, I wasn't a resident of their state in '98 or since...


    called them up to straighten it out, and she very matter of factly said, "oh we think you WERE a resident"...

    sending them my '98 returns now. From a different state.




    Always keep the fucking paperwork people.... you never know when you're gonna need it.

                  I still have an ongoing argument with the CAL State Franchise Tax Board for taxes they believe I owed from 95, 96, & 97. I didn't live in the U.S.A. in those years. It is a total Catch 22. If I file tax returns for zero, I am admitting that I was a resident of the state.

                                                          they are simply confused... no big deal. But I can see why... I split from my ex-wife in early '97 and moved out of state. We filed a joint return for '97 and I filed a part-year resident state... for '97. Filed a complete full year resident return in a different state for '98 though. I worked for a company in yet another state, paid by one of their branches in yet another state, and had my taxes done by a CPA in the original state making the claim.

                                                          What mystifies me though, is why the fuck a state tax revenue office can't simply plug my SSN into their computers and pull all this up in the first place.

                                                              A friend receives an early railroad retirement (due to a disability) and it is his only source of income. It is not subject to state taxes...but every single year...the state sends him notification that he owes them X number of dollars. Every single year he has to go through hours of phone calls...being passed from one person to the next...and mail in letters and forms. This has been happening every single year for the past ten years or so. He is getting more and more pissed each passing year.

                                                              I paid my IRS taxes this year as well as an amended taxes from 2001. After having filed the IRS told me that I owed additional monies...which I paid. They sent me another letter saying that I owed even more money. I decided enough is enough and spent hours on the phone for several different days with several different people...bottom line...instead of paying even more money...I got a substantial refund. Made my day.

                                                                                      After much harassment from this particular revenue department, I finally got what should be the last envelope. It was a bill (complete with return envelope) showing all the penalties and interest and everything dating all the way back to their claims, with an "administrative adjustment" which brought the total due to: $0.00

                                                                                      No apology letter, no nothing. LOL
