about 280 million americans have that direct line of sight....

The DirecTV signal is a line of site signal. Some people can not even pick up a signal or get the service. For those that can get the service you need to be VERY precise when lining up your dish with the satellite. You are not using a wave that has bounced off someone elses house you are pointing your dish at the ACTUAL satellite.

I will admit I do not know the details about what waves are bouncing around and where if you are in plain site of one of the 5 DirectV satellites, but to capture the signal it does take effort and you are not using a signal that is just randomly bouncing around. The effort to get the signal and decode it is theft. You can get as technical as you want but you are NOT utilizing a wave bouncing off a house or anywhere else that is "your property". You need to be in the line of site. You then need to decode the signal. That is theft.

To say that the waves bouncing around your property make it yours if you can crack it is insane. You cant pull a signal from pointing your dish at a tree in your yard. It wont work.

I'm getting the imopression that you feel it's illegial for me to LOOK at something from my property.

Not at all. Where did I say that? The signal is digitized and encrypted for a reason. That is there property. They pay for the satellites, they pay for the content and transmission of that signal. Subscribers support that service like any other business. If everyone stole the signal they would go out of business.

bullshit lawsuits. most are thrown out of court. most are won by the people who are decoding the signals.

but like any lawsuit , some lose. not many, but some do

ahh - so you can beam a signal onto me and my property that you still retain OWNERSHIP of.

what next - you can shoot me with a bullet and then you'll want the bullet back cause you think you still own it?

you suggest that someone can bean something onto my propery that i can't look into..............

it's not. It' s up to the satelitte companies to stay ahead of the curve in decoding technology and not for them to deprive us of our INHERENT property rights.

Its a signal you can't see. Who is supposed to pay for these broadcasts?? Without subscribers they dont exist. You wouldnt have satellite TV. Who cares if the waves are on or near your property. Put a tin foil hat on and start a petition to stop those pesky waves.

there is NO documentation to prove this either - other than BOGUS commericals made by cable companies spreading their propaganda.

it's LEGAL to decode ANYTHING beamed onto your property. You have the right to understand any language you want to learn or uncode.

next you'll tell me that i don'thave the right to learn spanish unless i pay you.

it's LEGAL to decode anything. You cann't make laws in a free socirty to stop people from UNDERSTANDING.

You are utilizing the waves coming directly from the satellite not from a bounced wave.

My point is any "stray"waves can not be utilized. The wave is NOT your property that was the original argument.
I don't watch enough tv to bother getting a dish. However much of my childhood was spent around astronomical observatories thus I easily comprehend "where" things are in the sky. Yes trees, buildings, mountains, etc. can get in the way of a signal at any given location but what does that have to do with legality?

Your voice isn't my property either, but if I can hear it there's nothing illegal about listening to it.

now you're totally full of shit - TV existed for dozens of years without subscription. it will still exist if subscription totally ends tomorrow. guess how - ADS dumbass.

ads pay for TV, sat and cable was just someone's idea to double charge for a service that was already free.

it's the sat companies obligation to stay ahead of the descramblers.

This thread has gotten quite interesting from a legal standpoint.

It does make an interesting legal point that if someone is beaming signals into your property then you should be able to do whatever you want with those signals.

                                  Hmmm.

show me a sucessful lawsuit against a home user. there isn't any.

they CAN legally sue a company that's making the devices on trademark and orther grounds though....... but it's almost impossible to sue someone for home non-commerical use.

Who cares if the waves are on or near your property. Put a tin foil hat on and start a petition to stop those pesky waves.
Why does it matter if a signal is visible or not? Does it somehow become technical mumbo jumbo if you can't see it or touch it?

Its not my problem who is supposed to pay for this service. The problem is they chose a flawed business model. If you sing on a street corner, you can't ask people not to listen if they haven't paid you.

ads pay for TV, sat and cable was just someone's idea to double charge for a service that was already free.

it's the sat companies obligation to stay ahead of the descramblers.
Ahh the name calling. TV can not even come close to the quality and quantity of programming that these services offer. To be able to watch a live broadcast in near real time from across the globe is made possible by this technology. Technology has to be paid for one way or another and usualy its by the end user. Deal with it. It still doesn't make it legal to crack there encoded signal.

The power company needs a permit or right of way to cross your property with its lines. That's a fact.

I know it costs money to do R&D and provide services. But that doesn't mean that you can trespass on other people's property or tell them what they can build.

If you can use the power of government to restrict me from building a decoder or sat dish, you are stripping me of my freedom. I didn't ask you to beam signals to my property.

Your time would be better spent developing a way to encrypt your signal so that it would be so costly to replicate it outside your technology that people would rather pay your price than try to do it themselves.

You are right, everything has a price. However do you want to live in a society where the price is determined by the courts or the free market? Which sort of society do you think inspires innovation and which one stifles it?

you should do some research about the company and see what kind of dirt you will find
I don't work for DirecTv nor do I agree with them. I am famailer with the fishing expedition they are on now. They are targetting mail lists from decoder companies that have been put out of business and busted (BECAUSE ITS ILLEGAL). How they are going about getting the people that using the service for free is wrong.

I do however understand that services have to be paid for. Your not going to get the NFL ticket on regular television nor the programming these services can offer. They do have a value. The satellites alone are very expensive to operate. It is a business. Like I said before twist it how you want. People want everything for nothing now days.

You are right, everything has a price. However do you want to live in a society where the price is determined by the courts or the free market? Which sort of society do you think inspires innovation and which one stifles it?
Ok I can see where you are coming from here. And I do agree. I want a society that inspires innovation. But if paying 30-70 bucks a month for a service is going to stifle innovation I don't what to say. Its all how one wants to rationalize it. I am not a huge Direct supporter by any means. I just got involved in this thread because I do know there is a difference between bounced radio waves and the Directv signal.

I am probably still not conveying what I am thinking properly. Think of it this way. Unlike cable television, which requires a wire running from the street into a home. DirecTV delivers its product via a satellite signal. A receiver inside the home is used to translate code gathered by an outside dish pointed toward satellites in orbit. NOT WAVES bouncing around your house.

No maybe splicing into cable television is ok for some of you as well but just because Directv does not have the same type of business model doesn't mean they should offer there product for free.

Tapping into a cable company's wire outside on a telephone pole is immoral -- it's theft. But receiving and decoding Sat Signals being beamed at my house, without paying the Sat company, is no more stealing than using my radio or television or using the light of the sun to read by.

Unlike cable television, which requires a wire running from the street into a home. DirecTV delivers its product via a satellite signal. A receiver inside the home is used to translate code gathered by an outside dish pointed toward satellites in orbit. NOT WAVES bouncing around your house.

if there were no waved bouncing around my house i wouldn't be able to get the signal would I?

Tapping into a cable company's wire outside on a telephone pole is immoral -- it's theft. But receiving and decoding Sat Signals being beamed at my house, without paying the Sat company, is no more stealing than using my radio or television or using the light of the sun to read by.

A dish has to be pointed at the satellite in the sky. It has to be precise.

I suppose hacking a private satellite network is legal as well if your home just so happens to be close enough to a business to pick up the signal. Tell that to a judge.
