Sample discussion today with one of the biggest players in the biz' about him selling me one of his best names:
ME: "Do you really want to get out of this name?"
HIM: "I don't want to sell but I would sell for over a million.
In this market I wouldn't even suggest that.
ive made millions with the domain though since 1998 when i got it."
Now that is a perfectly reasonable response: He wants a million for it, but knows it's not smart for a buyer to pay that in the current climate.
But for all the rest of you that are demanding 2-5 years revenue:
Get a fucking clue! There are so many challenges right now in adult that the actual long-term worth of ANY name is totally questionable.
Obviously I buy because I am (cautiously) optimistic, and there's always money to be made, but long term optimism is TOTALLY out the window, and type-in domains are very much a short-term proposition at this point. Between credit card company policies and gov't crackdowns on certain domain names, I ain't paying longer than a year or two max.
I totally understand if you own a name and are prepared to take your chances, and aren't gonna' be conned out of your name for a song, but you gotta' realize how it looks from the other side, which is damned motherfuckin' uncertain.
The dirty little secret of this business is that it's runnin' scared right now and bettin' on the right horse is risky business. And all the bravado bullshit I see on this board doesn't hide the fact that this business is going to get twistered again and again, making "certainty" very "uncertain". Traditional business metrics will not apply....sorry.
Acacia, DOJ, etc, etc? Just the beginning. Screw your three year's revenue. Get out now and pour your money into something more stable, like.....REAL ESTATE.
So get off the crack pipe and let's meet half way between "certain" and "uncertain" and make a deal.
