Why doesn't the US have an Autobahn?

Its amazing when you think Europe has this and we're stuck with slow motion 55 MPH highways.

Watching a show today about this and the safety records are better on Germany's autobahn then US highways, even with people cruising along in their Benz's at 150 +.

It'd be cool to at least have one coast to coast here in the US.

here in the UK we have a 70mph limit..and they are thinking of raising that to 90mph for good drivers in a designated lane.. most people drive at 90mph anyway so they should do it really

Apparently you have never been in a vehicle with JFPDude.

The only fucker I know that can pass a state cop sitting in the median with the radar gun out the window pointed at us and he passed the cop doing 95 ... the cop never even looked at us.

I think he was asleep.

No autobahn here JFPDude would be out driving all day. Hell he'd have to go back to driving a truck.

i think there is or used to be some areas where there is no speed limit. And on the side of the road they put markers where people died. Im thinking some place in the north like montana or something.

Or just drive from arizona to new mexico, its 75 and desolate as hell.

Ever notice that pretty much everything added to the Constitution after the original was a mistake.

I think the US used to have a road in missori (or somewhere) that was similar to the autobahn, but it didnt work out.. The autobahn has cameras covering the whole thing, so if there are accidents they can slow down the traffic quickly,(the US didnt have this) plus its much more regulated.. europe's cars are also designed to drive faster, no cup holders, ash trays, etc.. they are taught to drive and only drive, unlike in america where people drive, smoke, drink, eat, do make up, read, talk on there phones and other destracting things while driving.

Yeah? hmmm....maybe they were doing construction then. I was on some nice highways in N. Italy. Fast, fun, and lots of Ferraris.

Over half the Autobahn is now speed regulated.

I don't know about Florida, but all the freeways I drive usually flow comfortably between 65-80.

my comfort zone in my lexus is 145-165 (havent chipped it yet so it doesnt go faster), however my dad lived in germany for a long time and his response was everyone in europ drives fast and close together... but when there IS an accident, it's a hundred car pile up

Now for my own My brother was stationed in Frankfurt about 6 years ago. He met this German girl over there and one day decided to drive to see her. Brother was a Staff. Sgt
Anyways. he went and rented a Mercedes 565 Coupe and took off on the autobahn. He said he was doing real well, going about 170 kph when there was some slow traffic and he had to slow down and wait till it cleared. HAHA as they were taking back off, he had it in 3rd gear and wound it out and went to hit 4th, MISSED, hit 2nd, the wheels then started skidding becasue the car was traveling way faster than the wheels, and he slid out into a guard rail totaling the car! LMFAO *(CAN we SAY MORON)*
he was going about 70 mph when he hit 2nd gear instead of 4th.... Within 2 hours the rental place had him Identical car, delivered to the site of the accident and off he went again! Now hes my brother, but hes a moron, and just one of millions with licences! USA is not ready for the autobahn......

see, it's only the east coasters and iowa that have to drive horribly slow. we came up with a theory to this. the east states are smaller, so as the states get smaller, the speed limit gets slower. why? because they want you to _think_ the states are just as big as all the others.

it's 75 around here, except in cities, where it goes to 65.

want an autobahn? go to montana or oregon.

woah he must really be an idiot... in a recent extreme situation outside bakersfeild (edit) in a BMW 318i, my other fast paced driver friend dumped from 5th to 2nd @120mph to slow down (very effective mind you the first couple times) anyhow slowed to 90 by the time we flew past the cop then outran him, while trying to start the car again blew a piston sideways and a rod out the bottom of the car... if he was going 70 and downshifted and totaled a benz... you're right he shouldn't have a lisence!

When the Autobahn was made, there was no such thing as freeways/highways back then. The Autobahn was the first freeway. So think of when ever you get on the freeway in the US, your on a US version of the Autobahn.

The 55 limit on freeways wasn't a law until the 70s I think. Before that, just like now, it was up to the state to have a speed limit. Like Montona, most states didn't have speed limits unless you were in the city. When ever I head down to Mederia Beach or Clearwater, I'm usually above 80 anyway.

The driving tests in europe actually require ppl to know how do DRIVE. Not just parallel park. I HATE driving in the city cuz ppl dont know what they are doing. Its almost as bad on queens blvd!

It's 65 or 70 MPH in GA's rural areas. 55 is the speed limit in the more congested areas. Driving bumper to bumper on 12+ lanes of highway at 80-90 MPH would be a bad plan.

Also note that Germany has much stricter laws regarding DUI's and other traffic violations. We could probably trim the traffic off our roads and be able to raise the speed limits if we adopted the same idea.
