This is obvious... But many of them hold little or no weight.
Example, a spider will look at alt tags, meta tags, title, heading text etc etc. I could add up a 100 things. But I bet you if you get about 10 of the biggies right, it'll all fall into place for you

True, my site usually came out on 1st or 2nd page on some keyword search, some very common and targetted keywords related to my site. I got about 2-5 from google per day. I think link to related adult search engine works much better than google and yahoo.

My theory:
Pagerank is good because the Googlebot will visit you often if you have a good PR, so updating and tweaking has quick results.
That's from what I've seen in my server logs, my PR4 and up sites get visited daily from Googlebot with the results showing up in 1 or 2 days. My low PR sites get visited very sporatically.
So, a good PR site is nice for jumpstarting new domains with links and such too.
