Lensman's amazing tip of the day!

As you probably know, many cities turn lights green for ambulances, fire engines, and cop cars. What you probably don't know is that many of the stop lights respond to flashing lights.

So try this, as you approach a red light, start flashing your headlights, to your amazement, the light will turn green for you. It doesn't work everywhere, but when it does, it's a thing a beauty.

Usually does not work in the city but more in rural areas. Just my experience trying this since I was 15 and my buddies Mom told us this. She was an EMT.

Thank you Lensman for telling me what I have known since I went to High School. Now lets see if tomorrow you can tell us how you know which lights it will work on and which it will not.

Also this doesn't always work based on the where the sensor is and it is set to react to the flashing lights of an emergency vehicle. So cars that have low lighting or lights pointed downward won't always set off the sensors.<font color="606060"

yep, it really works.... used to do it all the time when rolling through a town in the middle of the night. No sense stopping a 40 ton rig when there's no one else around... just flash the highbeams a few times about a hundred yards away and presto! Green light.

In highschool we had a spot light we'd shine out the front window right up at the signal to get the lights to turn green just before we would get to the intersection..

Fuck.. We must of been bored as kids..

Now i could care less if I have to wait at a light.

some cities only recognize certain flash patterns, from strobe lights, the regular lights on some cars aren't powerful enough to have the sensor notice it

that trick only works at night, and two, its not
because of Emergency vehicles, I mean come on,
they have a license to run red lights, but its more
for the stop lights that use sensors instead of
scales under the pavement so when
a car runs over it, it triggers the light to change.

Yep, this worked like clockwork for me where I grew up.. only at night though, and only if no other cars were near the intersection.

on the contrary.... yes they can run all the red lights they need to in any given situation, but don't you think it might be better (as an emergency service personnel... cop, ambulance, firetruck, etc) to have a green light in your favor so that the rest of traffic is stopped, thus avoiding unneccessary risk of collision at what is probably a most inopportune time? Not everyone hears sirens you know.... people fail to get out of the way all the time. Perhaps their stereos are too loud bumping some shitty Eminem tune at levels that would deafen Superman to hear what's coming from the other directions.
