SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- An 11-year-old girl apparently hanged herself in her bedroom after being raped by her father earlier in the day, police said.

Valerie Charlene Lucie was found dead on Sept. 30. Timothy Lucie, 46, was charged Tuesday with rape and sodomy and released Wednesday on $35,000 bond.

Lucie told police he raped the girl in the shower after threatening to cut her hair unless she did what she was told, authorities said.

Lucie recanted after meeting with his lawyer, Raymond Dague, who said Lucie gave the statement only after police told him he failed a lie detector test and threatened to take away his four other children.

The defense attorney said that Lucie is wrongly accused, and that Lucie's wife does not believe the charges.

The girl's death has not officially been ruled a suicide. Lucie came under suspicion after an autopsy revealed physical signs that Valerie had been sexually abused before her death, according to court documents.

Yes they are capable. Had a cousin do it at a very young age. History also shows it is/was very common. Remember 11 is just recently considered young maturity wise.

Many years ago, my mom's Boss' son committed suicide. He was only 13 years old. He shot himself with his dad's gun, which he actually had to assemble as it was kept in pieces, under lock and key. 13 isn't too far away from 11 years old, and after being raped, i think it's entirely impossible that she killed herself.

I ain't trying to defend the father, but what he did was rape. Get him for the right crime.

kids, sadly, are capable. We have had a series of kids hanging themselves over here after they have been bullied at school. One just a few weeks ago. Part of the problem is that being so young when they get into a place where they don't see a way out they really don't know that there is a way. Youth is a very black and white period.

Also...publishing an address is irresponsible. I'm seriously not going to shed a tear when natural justice goes the way it will but what is the point of having a justice system if we are going to sancation vigilante behaviour on the outside?
