    Foreign Checks...

I've been getting a few checks from Canadian companies and I just got a batch of about 5g's returned. They all say "US Funds" or "US dollar account" on the checks. Is my bank erroring by not accepting these checks, or is there a procedure I need to follow. If it is an error, is it out of line if I request some sort of compensation for the hassle?

I figured. I need to have a serious talk with them. Thousands of dollars in returned checks isn't cool.

You don't bank with U.S. Bank, do you (that's the name of a bank, by the way, not bad grammar)? That's where my account it, and they're a bunch of bastards, especially when it comes to anything international.

I have it the other way around. I cash US funds into canadian accounts (have a US account too, but occasionally need it in Can$).
I just make sure to go to the teller and tell them SPECIFICALLY that its US funds. Even when I want it in my US account they screw up once in a while. Luckily the last time it was in my favor. She converted it with the exchange rate, but deposited it as US funds. So I got like 1.39 times the money I was depositing but it stayed US funds.

Bank errors happen all the time ! You have to stand up for yourself othervise they will walk all over you. If it stated US funds, it should be a negotiable instrument. They should compensate you for any costs incurred, and give you a letter stating it was their fault if any of your checks were returned as a result of this

And people wonder why I want wires and other forms of payment.

Banks suck when it comes to cheques!

Make sure you highlight the "US Funds" portion to the teller, or when you deposit the cheques. (And, I literally mean that: take a yellow highlighter to the words.).

Some smaller US banks don't recognize the fact that banks in Canada can deal with accounts in US funds.
