I think it was more that they get over the initial shock of falling, and their muscles instinctively relax, which results in less injury when they hit the ground. If they fall from a lower height then they don't have time for this.
My cat rolled right off the edge once at a flat I used to live in. She hung onto the concrete by her front claws and dragged herself back up somehow. I was lunging for her but it was all over in a couple of seconds. Her little heart was going a million miles a minute after that.
It was a first floor flat, but there *was* concrete below, so who knows what would have happened if she hadn't pulled herself up.
BTW, that first pic is really cool, that would be great shot if it was professionally done.
