You can't really prevent. Talk to your family doctor about it. It's the ulnar nerve trapped in a too narrow (relatively) ligamentum

get a pad to sit in front of your keyboard and keep your wrists straight. constantly typing with your wrists resting on the desk and ben upwards to place your fingers over the keyboard is the cts sniper attack... many a brave admin has fallen to this, and is my daily struggle to fight such things. slouching and horrid posture after several hours (12 - 15) at the computer is another. also if you suffer from this, you may also be interested in picking up visene tears - comp-u-drops or whatever. works wonders for CRT burn... *blink-blink*

I have it severely in both wrists... Some days I have shooting pain right up my arms, and other days my fingers are so numb I can't pick anything up because I drop it. I'm too far for therapy, surgery is my only recourse, but I'm not willing to have 6 weeks of wrists I can barely use while my kids are so young.. Too much hands-on at this age.. Gonna wait a few years until they don't need me as much to get the surgery done..

Trust me, letting it progress really sucks.

                          Get a good mouse.

                          I use Contour: http://www.contourdesign.com/perfit-new.htm

If I'd been using a normal mouse, I would have had problems now.

Also, I believe that fitness training helps. It makes the muscles in your arms stronger.

Yoga is very good too: Stretching and relaxing exercises.

If you can prevent it, do whatever you have to. I have it really bad. I wake up with my arms numb... sometimes it even hurts to hold a fork or open a bottle It sucks.

If you go to a neurologist though, they do have surgery for it. It's definitely uncomfortable to live with, you think you had a stroke every other day.

Invest in some wrist to hand splints with the aluminum plates in them. They run 12-20 a piece and sleep in them EVERY night. After a couple of nights, you'll quit bonking yourself with them and they really help out.

The hubby had it bad and I started to get it. He sleeps one month with and the next without and it rarely bothers him. I only need them every few months. A doc told him if his wrists were kept at 'rest' while he slept it would help. Must work! I know it worked for mine.

Recently on the health segment of the news they said that carpal wasn't as common as once thought. That alot of people had something similar and it didn't require surgery, just some sort of therapy or something. Might be worth checking out.

my mouse, keyboard and monitor are all at the same level.. those sliding platforms under the desks for keyboards are pretty bad imho. my elbow is always resting on the chair and my wrists always stay pretty much straight when i'm typing or using the mouse..
no need for pads, and never had a single problem.. i also spend more time on the computer than most of you probably.

perfect position for me.. wrist is touching the edge without sliding at all, and only the hand moves. elbow on the chair.

Preventing it: sleeping with arms straight; when doing repetitive arm/hands movements taking breaks and doing hand exercises and stretches. What you don?t want to do is let it go untreated for years, muscle and nerve damage will occur.

Best to see the doctor and have the test done. My hubby says the test hurt more than the surgery. I can tell you the test hurts?made me cry. I was borderline and opted for the hand therapy because I doubt I would redo the test and didn?t want optional surgery.

I've had wrist problems for over a year straight now, and my physical therapist said NOT to use any support for your mouse or keyboard. Do it freestanding, IE have your hands in the air while you type and move them around. Do not bend your wrists in order to reach parts of the keyboard, move your hand.

Have a good posture, take breaks, have the monitor at eyelevel.
