    Drugs sure fuck life up!

My little brother called me from Las Vegas on Sunday morning. He told me that he'd been wrong when he thought he could "quit" taking Meth anytime he wanted.

He said "I've done it before and quit with no problems. I don't know why it's different this time". He finally realized he needed help. He asked me if I'd take care of his little girl (almost 3 years old) if he checked himself into rehab. I agreed. I told him he definitely needed the help. He'd been using Meth for months.

The phone call ended when I told him I'd call a local rehab program here in Chico on Monday morning. He was crying, but relieved that he was finally going to get some help and that his little girl would be well cared for while he did so.

Sunday night (almost midnight) I get the call... The Las Vegas police department had picked him up and hauled him off to jail. I left immediately to go pick up his little girl. She's now here with me.

And to think the next day I would have had arrangements made for him to check into rehab.

Drugs sure are worth it, eh?

Of course not. He wouldn't have had enough motivation to get out of the house.

Sucks that it takes losing everything before someone turns around.

                  Drugs aren't the problem.

People who can't handle them are the problem.

Drugs are just a way of culling the weak minded from society.

Addiction is a sickness. Our laws are now going to punish him for having a disease. That's what is really fucked up about the situation.

I disagree totally. Cancer is a sickness, Caner is a Disease. Choosing to take drugs is a choice.

You don't make the decision to get cancer. You make the decision to take drugs.

I feel bad for his brother, and wish him the best of luck, but dont categorize him as being sick. He's not sick, he's an addict.

I've dealt with people on drugs and made visits to rehab centers. They always start off with saying "Your friend has a disease" I always counter with "Bullshit" They made a bad decision. Calling it a "sickness" and "disease" is just a way to make the person feel less responsible. No one ever held him down and said, I'm forcing you to take meth. He made the decision to. I'm glad he realizes he had an addiction and is getting help. It's a sad situation, and I wish him and his family good luck.

I know people with cancer as well, and to put a label a Meth Addict and a Cancer patient as both having a disease is just wrong.

Sorry...I'm very against drugs, and I agree with Donnovan. DRUGS DO FUCK UP YOUR LIFE!

You choose to take drugs at first, yes. And it's your own fault if you get addicted, yes. However, that does not mean that it isn't a sickness or disease.

If you choose to smoke, and you get lung cancer, does that mean lung cancer isn't a disease? Still, you chose to smoke, right?
If you have unsafe sex, and you get aids, does that mean aids isn't a disease? Still, you chose to have unsafe sex, right?
Now, if you choose to take drugs, and taking those drugs causes you to get addicted, why does the "having chosen to take drugs" cause it to be less of a disease?

                                  Yes, they do.

I have lost many friends to drugs as probably many here have. I myself struggle to maintain my own personal sobriety each day. Not the easiest thing to do sometimes, but, being alive is much better than being the dead.

If they have a "disease" they require lots of expensive therapy that never ends.

And then more drugs, but with "RX" on the bottle.

I never took Meth, but I'm always sceptic on the fact you get addicted to such a point you cant stop for a few days or forever. why does he need the drug? his mind tells him DRUG DRUG DRUG or cause hes gonna puke all around the place if he doesn't? either of them he could go over it no?

I mean I smoke pot regularly for over 5 years now, and if I stop smoking for a week I'm not gonna turn nuts. I know meth ain'T the same, but I never tried it and just can'T understand how such stories can happen.

WHY DOES HIS BODY NEED THE DRUG? please enlighten me

I mean I smoke pot regularly for over 5 years now, and if I stop smoking for a week I'm not gonna turn nuts. I know meth ain'T the same, but I never tried it and just can'T understand how such stories can happen.

If you stop using meth, the following symptoms can occur for a year or more:
                                                - Heavy depression
                                                - Insomnia
                                                - Paranoia & psychosis

Aside from that, your dopamine production is severely damaged *for good*, and since dopamine is a neurotransmitter that determines your sense of well-being, your average sense of well-being will go down... *for good*. Ofcourse, since meth does stimulate production of dopamine, taking meth again would increase your sense of well-being temporarily (although it would cause even more permanent damage to your dopamine metabolism).

And, since meth heavily stimulates dopamine production and dopamine is what reinforces behaviour, the behaviour of using meth is very quickly and strongly "learned"... what would normally take many years, is done in minutes to days with meth.

Ofcourse, there's also the point that meth raises your energy levels but depletes your "natural" energy levels in order to do that, so when you quit taking it, you will feel as if you're completely without energy.

Actually, it doesn't show the point. Your example shows one aspect of dropping a meth addiction (namely learned behaviour, which is about a 1000 times stronger with meth, since that actually adds artificial physical reinforcement to the learning process). However, there are quite a few other aspects, all extremely strong.
