Ok...I guess I'm the only one on this board that feels this way, but I don't think you should tell him he did a good thing.
If you tell him that it was ok, because the other kid started it, then you're only promoting violence.
You should tell him that he shouldn't have hit the kid...explain that kids can be mean sometimes, but he should always go tell someone of authority what is going on. If you tell him that he shouldn't have hit the kid, then this behavior could continue.
