                                      They can't, not with their current business model...

                                      Google would take a huge hit if they went public, they don't manage their money making programs for shit, tons of internal problems. Till google does a major overhaul, it would be stupid to invite more eyes on the inside of their business.

                                      Similar (sort of) was when Virgin went public. Huge success at first, but every time Branson made a hasty/crazy decision (which he did all the time and was the key to his success -- luck) investors freaked out.

                                      My theory anyway...

                                          i remember when a good friend was telling me that google will become the no1 SE. That was at their very early stages. To be honest, I didn't pay any attention because back then altavista, lycos and infoseek where the ultimate kings and I didnt have a clue about internet innovations.

Alot of people that have ph.D's and their a business person, like CTO, CEO's and have MBA's say that it wasn't worth it...It might help some people, but it doesn't help everybody, except waste their money!

(well, now they have ads, but they are certainly not intrusive like most sites, nor are they graphical)

Unlike Bill Gates, whose wealth is tied up in liquid assets (stock on the NASDAQ), these guys have their wealth tied up in a private company (NOT liquid). I'm willing to bet that there are at least a few people in porn that have more liquid assets / cash on hand than those guys.

                                                                                                                          The Google guys' only liquid assets would come from compensation from their own company. They can't really sell portions of their assets for cash as easily as Bill Gates and those other guys on the list could.

First off, Both the owners did their ph.D theis ON google. Secondly, you get PAID to do your ph.D... not a whole lot but around $20,000/year instead of PAYING $20,000/year.
