slinx, amsterdam doesn't give out new permits for canalboats, because they think it's already to full (on which i agree by the way)... so the only way to get your hand on a boat is buy an existing boat including permit. and those are pretty damn expensive indeed, because about anyone would love to live in the center of amsterdam.
