I think they are talking about the new SL, model R230, not the old one
The new SL 600 has a twin turbocharged V12, 0-60 in 4.3 range I believe. Pushing 500hp! Great cars though, but comparing apples to oranges. The SL is a heavyweight, the Porsche a pure sportscar. I would take any one of those though
I have owned a Porsche 911 turbo for the past two years and there is nothing on the road to touch me. I have put 56,000 miles on the clock and its still worth 60,000.
Before that I had a porsche 993 911 Targa and that was a cool machine, though not as good as the current beast.
Really the Merc is not in the same league. It doesnt turn heads and hasn't got the speed or class of a 911 Turbo.
I use my Porsche every day of the week. I even go to the supermarket in it and let me tell you there' plenty of MILF pushing their trolleys through the car park that will fuck for a ride around the block!

Oh if only I was single again!
Dude, i dont know where you live but here in Amsterdam people dont turn their head for a porsche....maybe the newest most expensive one but other than that...no.
Now like i said i owned a 600sl and people went home with a neck ache. I didnt buy it so people can turn their head but found out soon enough they did. I never had so much attention from chicks whn driving that car. Those chicks dont look at porche's since they see 10 a day.
Now talking about class. To me a porsche has no class. They are nice cars, expensive but no class. A 600sl IS class.

I live in the countryside of Southern England and the roads are blocked with tractors and JCB's, so yes my Porsche certainly turns heads around here.
Obviously living in a city or large town there are more about, but as for Porsche Turbo's there are probably only about 20 in the whole county of Dorset.

you keep saying this, and it keeps making me giggle.
for those interested in sports cars, the 911 simply blows away the MB. if you're interested in luxury and image, than by all means, go with an SL. i looked seriously at a SL500 (among others) before buying my Porsche... and i simply couldn't consider it seriously after i drove it. reminds of an old boy's car. handles like a tractor compared to my 911 C4S (and weighs almost as much lol). no manual transmission. did i say heavy? has plenty of gadgets though - did i mention the manual for the car is over 750 pages long lol? if that's your thing, great. it's just not mine.
anyway, they are very, very different cars. The only competitors the SL has are... other retractable hard top convertible luxury grand tourers. namely: the Lexus SC430 and the Cadilac XLR -which it beats hands down imho.
The 911's competition is more along the lines of the Corvette, M3, 360 and Acura NSX.
Got a CL 600 myself, awesome car.
Thinking about buying something else, I'm considering a SL 55AMG or SL 500 among some other cars.
One thing is for sure, I'm gonna test drive some porsche's and some other ones before I do anything.
But I don't think I want to put more money into a car...not the best investment you do...but damn it's fun

I make you giggle? Hm...
Anyway, your post is clear and i 100% agree with it. They are 2 completely different cars and im obviously im looking for something completely different when buying a car.
